CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.- The #3 Lady Tigers battled the #11 Georgetown Tigers for their last conference match-up of the season. Campbellsville closed their season conference match-ups undefeated for the first time in five years after taking tonight's victory over Georgetown, 71-67.
From the opening seconds of the game, the tension on the hardwood was palpable. The scoreboard remained vacant, with neither team's defense allowing any baskets through. Kaitlynn Wilks put the Lady Tigers on the score first from the charity stripe. Maddy Boyle and Lauren Lee's staggering jumpers only propelled Campbellsville forward on the lead, with Georgetown still at zero. The opposing Tigers got their first single point from the free-throw line, as Lee's buckets further expanded the Lady Tigers' advantage, reaching double digits on the scoreboard with Georgetown stagnant at one. Campbellsville led the game at the end of the first quarter, 15-3.
The opposing Tigers scored the first bucket of the second quarter within the first 15 seconds of play. Boyle and Courtney Pritchett swiftly struck back as Georgetown made their first three-pointer of the game. Maddie Nalley came off the bench with vehement defensive rebounds, resulting in Wilks' first three-point bucket of the contest. As the second quarter unfolded, the Lady Tigers kept an advantage of at least 10 points over the opposing Tigers. Georgetown attempted to catch up, but their turnovers continued to be their demise. In the closing minutes of the second quarter, Kayla Luebbe, Whitney Hay, and Tyra Flowers racked up layup after layup, contributing to Campbellsville's astounding upper-hand. At the end of the first half, the Lady Tigers remained in the lead, 37-26.
At the half, Campbellsville strongly capitalized from their short-range shots, more than tripling Georgetown with 22 points in the paint to their six. The opposing Tigers collected significantly more fouls than the Lady Tigers, which greatly benefitted their advantage, going 66.7% at the charity stripe to their 25%.
Much like the second, Georgetown began the third quarter with a layup. The score remained idle in the next couple of minutes of the quarter, with neither team managing to throw any successful baskets. Wilks broke the scoring halt with a layup aided by Pritchett's third assist of the night. Halfway through the third quarter, the commotion on the court only increased as the minutes passed, with both teams battling ferociously to claw up to victory. The opposing Tigers' fouls continuously brought the Lady Tigers to the charity stripe, bringing point after point to increase their deficit. Although Georgetown boosted their steals, they were not enough to deter Campbellsville's momentum. Going into the last quarter, the Lady Tigers remained ahead of the opposing Tigers, 57-47.
The final quarter started with another three-point bucket from Georgetown. Hay struck the opposing Tigers with compelling steals, passing the ball to Lee, who agilely maneuvered it down the court, scoring a staggering layup. Bailey Pedigo and Pritchett's avid assists kept her fellow Lady Tigers with strong control over the ball, augmenting Campbellsville's lead with buckets from Luebbe and Boyle. Georgetown heightened their offensive efforts, capitalizing off long-range baskets to decrease their deficit. However, the Lady Tigers did not falter at the sight of combat. At the end of the game, Campbellsville took the win over Georgetown, 71-67.
At the end of the contest, the Lady Tigers actively took advantage of the opposing Tigers' losses of possession, collecting 21 points off turnovers to their 10. Four Lady Tigers reached double digits during tonight's game: Wilks with 19 points, Boyle with 13, and Lee and Luebbe with 12 each.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action, hosting the College of the Ozarks Bobcats on Saturday, February 24th, beginning at 1 p.m. ET, for their last home game of the season.
