CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.- The Lady Tigers hosted the #4 University of the Cumberlands Patriots for a doubleheader on Friday. Campbellsville finished the day with one defeat and one victory against the Cumberlands.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 8, Cumberlands 11
The Patriots began the game with a two-run home run to center field during the top of the first. Emily Reynolds retaliated for the Lady Tigers with a home run to left field during Campbellsville's portion of the inning. Lindsey Mitchell followed with a single to left center, bringing Caroline Pitcock across the plate to tie the scoreboard.
During the top of the second, Cumberlands collected three runs with two singles to shortstop and up the middle, taking the lead in the game. The Lady Tigers were retired three up, three down style to close the inning.
The Patriots did not manage to score throughout their share of the third. However, Campbellsville tied the score during the bottom of the inning as Jessie Daniels, Mitchell, and Keely Bowling each collected a home run for the Lady Tigers.
With a single down the right field line, Cumberlands scored another run, reclaiming their advantage over the game. Camille Conkright doubled to left center, stealing second base before the end of the inning was recorded.
Although the Patriots singled to center field to open the fifth, they were quickly put away shortly after. Campbellsville's share of the inning was short-lived, put away in three up, three down style.
Cumberlands continued to expand their lead during the top of the sixth with four home runs. The Lady Tigers loaded their bases with a single by Kaeleigh Tuck, and Taylor Windell seized the opportunity to score another run for Campbellsville. Conkright singled to the pitcher, loading the Lady Tigers' bases again.
The Patriots went three up, three down fashion during the top of the seventh. To begin the bottom of the final inning, Mitchel scored the fifth home run for Campbellsville. Morgan Carter reached first base on an error by shortstop, bringing Windell home for another run and decreasing the Lady Tigers' deficit on the scoreboard.
Both teams remained close to each other at the end of the game, each collecting five home runs throughout the first game. Mitchell led Campbellsville with three hits and three RBIs. Additionally, Ellie Coley, Courtney Patterson, and Ally Bush worked together striking out six Cumberlands batters.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 10, Cumberlands 8
The Patriots reached base via a walk. UC couldn't score before switching sides with the Lady Tigers. Campbellsville followed in the Cumberlands' footsteps as Pitcock earned a free base via walk, quickly advancing to second with a single up the middle. Bowling hit the game's first home run to left center, bringing in three runs for the Lady Tigers.
Cumberlands was put away in order during the top of the second. Carter opened Campbellsville's share of the inning with a home run to left field, amplifying the Lady Tigers' lead.
The Patriots began the third inning with a single to left field but showed nothing. Wendell's first hit of the day resulted in Pitcock scoring another run. Shortly after, Carter grounded out to second base, bringing Mitchell across the plate.
Although Cumberlands collected a single to shortstop, Katy Chadwell swiftly put the Patriots away during the top of the fourth. Campbellsville's portion of the inning was short-lived, quickly being put away in three up, three down style.
Cumberlands loaded their bases during the top of the fifth, scoring their first three runs of the game. The Lady Tigers' bottom of the inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by Windell, expanding the gap in the scoreboard to five runs over the Patriots.
Cumberlands strengthened their efforts at the sight of trouble, scoring three runs during the top of the sixth, decreasing their deficit to two runs behind Campbellsville. Mitchell singled up the middle bringing Reynolds across the dish for another Lady Tiger run. Bowling doubled to left center, stealing a base and bringing Pitcock home.
In the opening of the final inning, the Patriots loaded their bases with no outs recorded. Cumberlands collected two runs throughout the inning, unable to surpass Campbellsville.
The Lady Tigers surpassed the Patriots in several statistical factors of the game: home runs (3-0), RBIs (10-8), OPS (1.235-.806), and putouts (21-18). Mitchell led Campbellsville with three hits and Bowling with four RBIs. Additionally, Chadwell struck out three Cumberlands batters.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 26th, hosting the University of the Cumberlands Patriots for another doubleheader beginning at 1 & 3 p.m. ET.
