CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville Tigers continued their series campaign against the #4 University of the Cumberlands Patriots on Sunday afternoon. After falling in the series' first game, the Tigers finished the day with one win and one loss.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 7, Cumberlands 11
Tristin Crusenberry opened on the mound for the Tigers. With already two outs, the Patriots sent a pitch to the left center fence for the game's first run. Campbellsville was retired quickly to move into the top of the second inning.
Cumberlands managed to add three more runs to their side of the scoreboard, taking a 4-0 lead over the Tigers in the second inning. Much like the first, the Tigers were put away in three up, three down fashion.
With the bases loaded in the top of the third, a walk sent another run across the plate for the Patriots.
Throughout the Tigers' share of the inning, Bret Bowers earned free bases with a lead-off walk but was left stranded.
Chad McCann gave the Tigers their first run of the ball game, sending a pitch to the right field fence in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Patriots continued to stack on runs to their lead, extending their advantage to 11-1 over Campbellsville.
Jonah Bachiu reached base via walk in the bottom of the fifth inning. Niklas Rossius came in to pinch hit and was also given free bases, followed by Lorenzo Gonzalez, reaching on the third walk in a row. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, Chad McCann sent a pitch to the left center gap for a double and scored Bachiu and Rossius. Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn't send L. Gonzalez or McCann across the plate.
The top of the sixth inning was put away in just eight pitches from Joe McBride. An outfield error put Trent Buchanan on base. L. Gonzalez reached on an infield error, advancing to second on the throw and moving Buchanan into scoring position at third base. Bowers was awarded bases on a walk to leave the bases loaded with no outs. Jack Marlin reached via walk, sending L. Gonzalez across the plate. Reid Sturn, pinch running for Buchanan, was sent across the plate after a pitch hit Jorge Gonzalez to reach base. McCann reached via walk, and Terry was hit by a pitch to send two more runs across the plate for the Tigers. Campbellsville cut into the Patriots' once ten-run lead to just four runs before the end of the sixth inning.
The Tigers kept the Patriots from scoring in the top of the seventh inning, but the Tigers' effort wasn't enough, falling 11-7.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 9, Cumberlands 5
Garrett Maloney opened on the mound to begin the second game. Maloney struck out two of the three outs to move into the bottom of the first. Chad McCann singled to left field, advancing to second on a wild pitch, but was left on base.
Much like the first inning, Maloney struck out two of the three outs in the top of the second. Buchanan reached via walk. With Shoki Fukui pinch running for Buchanan, Terry sent a pitch to the center field fence for a double, advancing Fukui to third. Bachiu grounded out but sent Fukui across the plate and Terry to third base. Terry added another run to the Tigers' side of the scoreboard after a wild pitch. Before the final out was recorded, the Tigers took a two-run lead over the Patriots.
An infield error put a runner on base for the Patriots, but he was picked off to close the top half of the inning. Amayas Lamar singled to right field to lead off the bottom of the third. Jorge Gonzalez followed with his own hit, reaching base on a single to left field. After a double play, Lamar was the only base runner for the Tigers. Kale Seitz singled to right field, scoring Lamar and extending their lead to 3-0. The Tigers' success continued with a double from Mael Zan, putting two runners in scoring position. Both were left stranded to move into the fourth inning.
The Patriots were put away in three up, three down fashion. Bachiu reached base via walk to begin the bottom of the fourth inning. Henry Wright followed with a hit through the right side, sending Bachiu to third base. Lamar reached after being hit by a pitch, leaving the bases loaded. J. Gonzalez followed with a single to shortstop, advancing all the runners and scoring Bachiu. McCann reached on a fielder's choice, preventing the Tigers from sending any more across the plate. The Tigers led over the Patriots 4-0 to go into the fifth inning.
The Tigers retired the Patriots quickly to move into the bottom of the fifth. Zan led off the bottom half, reaching via walk and stole second. Zan advanced to third base on a sacrifice fly from Terry. Bachiu was awarded free bases on a walk and stole second. Both were left on base to move into the top of the sixth inning.
Maloney's no-hitter ended in the top of the sixth inning, leaving a runner at second for the Patriots. Shortly after, the Cumberlands had the bases loaded and scored their first run of the game. A hit to left field sent two more runners across the plate, cutting into the Tigers' lead, 4-3.
J. Gonzalez led off the bottom of the sixth, reaching on a walk. McCann followed with another pitch sent to the fence, scoring J. Gonzalez. A wild pitch sent McCann to third base, and Fujie reached via walk. Zan was awarded free bases with a walk, loading the bases. The bases remained loaded with a single from Buchanan, scoring McCann. Terry reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Fujie.
Logan MacNeil took over on the mound, relieving Maloney in the seventh inning. The Patriots sent a pitch into right field, scoring two runs to leave the score at 7-5 in favor of the Tigers. Fukui reached base for the Tigers on a walk, followed by McCann with a single through the right side, advancing Fukui to third. Yosuke was sent to first after being hit by a pitch and leaving the bases loaded. All three Tigers were left stranded.
Mason Lee came to the mound for the Tigers to begin the eighth inning. Lee and the Tigers put away the Patriots quickly. In the bottom half, Buchanan reached via walk with Reid Sturn coming in to pinch run. McCann reached on a fielder's choice and advanced into scoring position at second base on a throwing error. Bachiu sent a pitch to right center, earning a double and scoring Terry. After Bachiu stole third, Wright singled to right center, scoring Bachiu and leaving the Tigers with a four-run lead.
Campbellsville led in many statistical categories in game two: runs (9-5), hits (13-5), doubles (4-1), RBI (8-5), stolen bases (4-0), OPS (.996-.471), and putouts (26-24).
The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, April 9th, to take on Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Kentucky. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
