Campbellsville tested in loss to #10 Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Campbellsville fell on the road in three sets to the undefeated, #10-ranked University of the Cumberlands Patriots Thursday night (15-25, 19-25, 16-25).

Campbellsville Tigers Story Banner 25-26

  • The Tigers struggled to find an offensive rhythm against a tough Patriots defense, finishing the match with a .040 hitting percentage.
  • Emily Aabye led the Campbellsville attack with six kills, while Elif Akcivi added five.
  • Cumberlands' offense was the difference-maker, as the Patriots hit .225 for the match.
  • Libero Maddie Pennington anchored the back row with a team-high 17 digs.

The Patriots struck first to open the match, but a kill from Elif Akcivi quickly tied the score at 1-1. However, Cumberlands responded with a five-point run to take control of the set. Despite Campbellsville's effort to speed up their offense, a series of errors kept them behind as the Patriots took the first set, 25–15.

In the second set, Cumberlands once again jumped out to an early lead. Kills from Madison Farmer and Kati Vest helped keep the Tigers in it. With the score tied at 10, the Patriots' aggressive serving continued to apply pressure. Angi Gstach scored back-to-back points to bring Campbellsville within one at 15-14, yet the Tigers couldn't overcome the deficit, dropping the second set 25–19.

Looking to extend the match, Campbellsville struck first in the third set. However, the Patriots' middle attackers proved difficult to contain, fueling a 5-0 run that forced a Tiger timeout with Campbellsville trailing by 5 points at 10-5. Despite late efforts from Akcivi and Sophie Hill, along with an ace from Maddie Pennington, Cumberlands proved too strong, taking the set 25–16 and completing the sweep.

The Tigers will look to bounce back next Tuesday as they travel to face the Brescia Bearcats. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
