Serving barrage powers Campbellsville past Thorobreds

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers' serves ignited their sweep of the Kentucky State Thorobreds Tuesday night (25-15, 25-16, 25-16).

  • The Tigers showcased their depth with a different starting lineup, as setter Jana Krstic orchestrated a balanced and efficient offense.
  • Campbellsville's offense hit an impressive .329 as a team, while the defense held Kentucky State to just a .013 hitting percentage.

  • The Tigers return to Gosser Gymnasium on Friday at 3 p.m. ET to take on the Cumberland Phoenix, continuing their Mid-South Conference play.

In the opening set, Kentucky State came out strong with the first two points of the match. Campbellsville quickly settled in, and after trading points, the Tigers took charge. Leading 12-11, Maddie Pennington ignited a massive 12-1 run from the service line that included two aces. Elif Akcivi fired up the crowd with a solo block during the run, and Angi Gstach closed out the first set with an ace to seal the 25–15 win.

The second set saw Brooke Hager come out hot with a block and a kill to set the tone. Jana Krstic then dominated from the service line with three consecutive aces to push the Tigers ahead 5-0. Olivia Hellman added two more aces to help the Tigers build an insurmountable lead. The Tigers maintained full control from there, taking the second set 25–16.

Looking to complete the sweep, Hager once again opened the third set with a kill, followed by a stuff block from Riley Thorne that electrified the Campbellsville bench. Freshman Madison Farmer made her presence known with multiple kills, and Krstic added a setter dump. Farmer tallied two more kills to put Campbellsville within one point of victory, and Sophie Hill sealed the match in exciting fashion with an ace, closing the sweep 25–16.

Showcasing the team's depth, Jana Krstic stepped in to run the offense and excelled, dishing out 27 assists to go with her three aces and four kills on .667 hitting. The attack was balanced, with Angi Gstach and Brooke Hager co-leading the team with seven kills each. The defense was stout at the net, recording 18 total blocks, led by Elif Akcivi with five.
