Tigers fall short on day two in Hattiesburg, leave winless

HATTIESBURG, Miss - Following the Tigers' two losses on day one in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Campbellsville held high hopes for day two on Saturday to close their road trip. The Tigers' offense continued to put good swings on baseballs, and pitchers threw well, though they fell in both games. Campbellsville fell in game one to #16 Missouri Baptist, 4-2, and lost the second game in extra innings to #9 William Carey, 2-3.

GAME ONE: Campbellsville 2, Missouri Baptist 4

Tristin Crusenberry started on the mound for the Tigers, coming off a decent start against Talladega College last week. From the get-go, Crusenberry had his work cut out for himself. Crusenberry punched out his first batter, looking to set the tone early, but the Spartans had other intentions. The next batter reached on an error to shortstop, followed by a walk that put runners at first and second with one out. Crusenberry attempted a double-play ground ball but was unable to complete the play, allowing the runner to score. Crusenberry ran into trouble again in the second inning as the Spartans loaded the bases with two singles and a walk with one out. This time, however, the Tigers were able to roll the double play to escape the jam.

After a quiet first inning for the Tigers, designated hitter, River Terry, gave the Tigers a baserunner after being hit by a pitch. Left fielder Bret Bowers collected his first extra-base hit of the season with a double in the left-center gap, moving Terry to third. Henry Wright followed with a ground out to the shortstop, scoring Terry.

The Spartans made Crusenberry labor hard in the third inning, beginning with a walk and a single to put runners at the corners with no outs. A wild pitch scored the inning's first run and moved the other baserunner to third. From there, the runner scored after another error to the second baseman. The Spartans loaded the bases for the second time with a walk and a single, and the Tigers still had yet to collect an out. Fortunately, Crusenberry was able to limit the damage with a fielder's choice ground ball that scored one, followed by a double play to stop the bleeding.

The Tigers did their best to respond to the crooked number. Second baseman Zane Skansi hit a one-out double, first baseman Jaxson Grubbs walked, and Terry was hit by a pitch for the second time to load the bases. The Tigers came up short and could not cash in any runs.

James Teets collected a single in the fourth, with Trey Proctor coming in the pinch run. Proctor stole second. The Spartans plunked Yosuke Fujie for their third hit batter of the game, putting runners on first and second for the Tigers. Both baserunners were stranded again, as the Tiger offense was unable to capitalize.

After a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers called for righty reliever Ian Roemer to take over for Crusenberry. Roemer successfully shut down the Spartan offense for good, as he retired nine of his next ten batters while picking up a strikeout.

The Tiger offense struggled to get anything going until the seventh inning when Skansi and Antony Gilbert collected back-to-back singles, chasing the Spartans' starter out of the game. The first batter faced by the reliever was Grubbs, who walked to load the bases. Terry struck out swinging, but the ball got away from the catcher, resulting in Skansi scoring the final run for the Tigers.

The Tigers lost game one to the Spartans with two runs on five hits with four errors, while the Spartans won with four runs on five hits with one error.

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 2, William Carey 3

After the loss in game one, the Tigers looked to bounce back. Brody Forno started on the mound following his shortened debut last week. After striking out the first batter faced, Forno allowed the only run of his start with a two-out single, followed by an RBI double. The righty held the Crusaders to just one run over five innings of work, allowing three more hits while striking out ten.

The Tiger offense managed a couple of baserunners through the first two innings but remained scoreless going into the top of the third. A single by Lorenzo Gonzalez woke the offense up with a one-out single, and Proctor came in to pinch run again. The speedster quickly found himself standing on third base after the ball got away from the catcher during his stolen base attempt. Fujie came in clutch for the Tigers with a game-tying single, scoring Proctor easily.

The ballgame remained tied until the top of the fifth inning when Fujie and Jonah Bachiu worked walks with two outs. Skansi cashed one in for the Tigers as he poked an RBI single into left, making the Crusaders dig into their bullpen to close out the inning.

The Tigers didn't relieve Forno until the sixth inning, calling lefty reliever PJ Ledesma to continue the pitching duel. Ledesma didn't make it easy on himself, hitting the leadoff hitter on the first pitch. The Crusaders followed up with a bunt single and tried to bunt again, but the Tigers were able to hose the lead runner at third. Ledesma locked in, striking out the next two batters to keep the Tigers on top.

The Tigers couldn't add to thier side of the scoreboard in the seventh inning, but the Crusaders threatened to tie it with a leadoff single that stole second base. Another defensive blunder by the Tigers' defense allowed the run to score, sending the game into extra innings.

Skansi and Gilbert worked walks with one out in the top of the eighth, but the Tigers' struggles at the plate continued, leaving the runners stranded. Ethan Wood took over for the Tiger pitching staff, taking Campbellsville into the ninth with a clean inning.

The Tigers' final threat of the game came when Wright led the ninth inning with a double to left field. Unfortunately, the Crusaders' pitching staff was able to hold the Tigers scoreless with a couple of key strikeouts and a ground ball to escape the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Wood retired his fourth batter in a row but walked and hit the next two batters to put the winning run in scoring position. The Crusaders walked it off with a timely single to center, scoring the winning run.

The Tigers lost their second game in extra innings with two runs and six hits with one error, while the Crusaders won with three runs and eight hits with one error.

Campbellsville will be back in action on Saturday, February 15th, to take on the Siena Heights Saints at their home-opener doubleheader. The games are set to begin at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. ET.
