CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville Tigers continued their homestand on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Aquinas College Saints. This was the first time in history the two teams had faced off, and the Tigers looked to continue their success after taking two from Michigan-Dearborn on Friday. The Tigers shut out the Saints in game one 13-0 and won the second game 16-5.
Game One: Campbellsville 13, Aquinas 0
On the mound for the Tigers in game one was Garrett Maloney, making his fourth start of the season. Coming into the day, Maloney had given up only one earned run in 17 innings of work. Maloney put on another pitching clinic against the Saints with six scoreless innings. After picking up seven strikeouts in his start on Monday, Maloney finished the week with an even 20, striking out 13 Saints. Through his dominant outing, Maloney allowed seven base runners with five hits, a walk, and an error.
While Maloney was busy rolling through the lineup, the Tigers' offense erupted. Trent Buchanan and Zane Skansi started the Tigers' party in the first inning with back-to-back singles. Antony Gilbert began with a three-run home run to left field, his first of the season. Bret Bowers and James Teets kept the offense rolling with back-to-back doubles, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
In the second inning, Yosuke Fujie connected with a one-out triple to right field and scored on a wild pitch. Fujie's run was all the Tigers would manage in the inning.
The Tigers threatened to score again in the third inning after walks to Bowers, James Teets, and Henry Wright loaded the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, all three base runners were stranded.
The Tigers took the missed scoring opportunity personally and went into the fourth inning looking for more runs. Buchanan found his way on base with a leadoff walk, and Skansi trailed him with a hit-by-pitch. Swinging a hot stick, Bowers picked up his second hit of the day with a single that drove in Buchanan. After a walk to Jaxson Grubbs, the Tigers had the bases loaded with two outs for the second time. The Tigers made sure to capitalize this time, as Tanner Park launched a towering grand slam, putting the Tigers up 10-0.
With their foot on the gas pedal, the Tigers looked to play add-on in the bottom of the fifth inning. Fujie kicked off the frame for the Tigers and found his way on base, reaching on an error. Niklas Rossius came in to pinch-hit for Skansi and tallied his first hit of the season with a single to left field. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position, then Gilbert cashed one in for the Tigers, reaching on the second error of the inning. Coming into pinch-hit for Bowers was Brock Brubaker, who picked up his first hit of the season with an RBI single, scoring Rossius. With one out and runners at the corners, Teets capped off the inning with a fielder's choice that scored Gilbert.
The Tigers threatened to score again in the bottom of the sixth inning after a walk to Shoki Fukui and a hit-by-pitch to Zaia Acklus, though they could not add to their 13-run lead.
Coming in to close for the Tigers in the seventh inning was Logan MacNiel, making his third appearance of the season. MacNiel slammed the door, retiring all three batters faced while picking up a strikeout.
The Tigers won game one of the doubleheader with 13 runs on 11 hits and one error, and the Saints were shut out with five runs and two errors.
Game Two: Campbellsville 16, Aquinas 5
Toeing the rubber in game two for the Tigers was Tristin Crusenberry, making his fourth start of the season. From the get-go, Crusenberry had his work cut out for himself. The first batter of the game reached safely after a fly ball to left field was dropped, placing the runner at second base. A wild pitch moved the runner to third base, which allowed the Saints to strike first with an RBI-sacrifice fly ball. Crusenberry punched out the next hitter, followed by a single, and two walks loaded the bases. The next batter ripped a double down the left field line that cleared the bases, giving the Saints a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers' offense had some work to do in the bottom of the first inning. Fujie led the game off with a walk and stole second base after the next two hitters were retired. This proved to be crucial, as Gilbert came up clutch with a single that scored Fujie. Bret Bowers stepped up with two outs and lasered home run to left field, shortening the Saints' lead to one run.
After Crusenberry picked up a big shut-down inning at the top of the second, the Tigers aimed to take the lead at the bottom of the inning. Reid Sturn and Fujie worked walks to give the Tigers two men on base with one out. Trent Buchanan followed up with a single that scored Sturn, and a wide throw allowed Fujie to score and give the Tigers the lead. The offense was just getting started, though, as Skansi brought the boom with a monster two-run home run to left center field. Bowers tried to keep the inning alive with a two-out single and stolen base, but the Tigers had to settle for four in the inning.
Crusenberry continued on the mound for the Tigers in the third inning, in even bigger need of a shut-down frame. He ran into trouble again when a leadoff walk and a double put two men in scoring position with one out. The Saints got the job done with a ground ball that scored the runner from third. Crusenberry finished the inning and kept the Tigers in front.
The Tigers' offense went quietly in the bottom of the third, which brought Joe McBride to the mound to take over for Crusenberry in the fourth. McBride came in strong for the Tigers and shut down the Saints' offense for the remainder of the game. McBride only ran into trouble in the sixth inning after two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out. McBride kept his composure and struck out the next two batters. He finished the game with eight strikeouts over four innings of work, allowing one hit and walking four.
While McBride was working, so was the Tigers' offense, which had only just begun their scoring spree. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Fujie kept the offense rolling with a leadoff double. After Buchanan moved Fujie to third with a ground ball out, Skansi stayed hot with an RBI double that put the Tigers up 8-5.
Still not done yet, the Tigers' offense looked to add to their three-run lead in the fifth inning. Nick Hagen led off the inning with a double and was pinch-run for by Trey Proctor. Park followed with a single, and Sturn loaded the bases after he was plunked. Up stepped Wright, who demolished the Tigers' second grand slam of the day for his fourth homer of the season. Still looking to add to the lead, Fujie collected his third hit of the day with a single, then stole second base. Gilbert picked up Fujie with a single, capping off a five-run inning for the Tigers.
With gas left in the tank, the Tigers' offense continued to produce in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hagen led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, pinch-run again by Proctor. Brubaker added another base runner with a walk, and both runners were moved up when River Terry grounded out. Fujie closed out the Tigers' offensive surge with a three-run blast over the left-center field wall for his sixth of the season.
The Tigers won game two of the doubleheader with 16 runs on 13 hits with an error, while the Saints lost with five runs on four hits with an error.
