CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.- The #1 Lady Tigers took on the #9 Williams Baptist University Lady Eagles on Saturday for the NAIA Tournament Second Round. Campbellsville capitalized off Williams Baptist turnovers to take the victory with sustained shots in the paint, 80-64.
The first quarter began with an exchange of threes in the opening seconds. As the Lady Tigers continuously stole the lead, the Lady Eagles tied the score shortly after. Campbellsville got ahead by a couple of possessions with layups from Lauren Lee, Whitney Hay, and Talynne Shearer. The contest quickly turned foul-laden as the pressure on the court increased. Williams Baptist tied the score at 15 with another shot from the three-point line. The Lady Tigers did not stand back, intensifying their action in the paint to reopen the gap on the scoreboard and earn their largest lead of the first quarter, holding 13 points over the Lady Eagles. Campbellsville led at the end of the first ten minutes of play, 28-15.
Hay and Tyra Flowers only increased the Lady Tigers momentum in the second quarter, with relentless drives to the bucket to preserve Campbellsville's upper hand. Williams Baptist retaliated with several layups, but the Lady Tigers' intensity remained overpowering. The Lady Eagles struggled to score as Campbellsville's defense stood firm. Halfway through the second half, the Lady Tigers increased their advantage to 15, enormously capitalizing off Williams Baptist's turnovers to rack up bucket after bucket. Campbellsville's offensive rebounds remained one of their biggest strengths in maintaining control over the ball throughout the first half. At the half, the Lady Tigers remained ahead, 45-32.
The game did not see a field goal until two minutes into the third, as Shearer collected her first assist, aiding Flowers in another layup. Both teams exchanged layups in the following minutes. Lee and Bradley each faced opportunities at the charity stripe, collecting more points in Campbellsville's favor. The Lady Eagles collected two three-point buckets in the closing minutes of the third quarter, attempting to decrease their deficit on the scoreboard. The Lady Tigers still led 64-52 going into the final quarter.
Williams Baptist came into the fourth period, increasing its momentum from the three-point line and scoring another long-range shot in the opening seconds of the fourth. Shearer and Bradley did not falter at the sight of pushback, collecting back-to-back layups. Hay and Lee continued to preserve Campbellsville's dominance on the court with avid jumpers, putting the Lady Tigers ahead by 20 points with less than five minutes left on the clock. Campbellsville's defensive rebounds returned the ball to the Lady Tigers to connect for more baskets in the game's closing. Campbellsville took the victory, 80-64.
The Lady Tigers will be battling the winner between the Governors State Jaguars and the Dakota State University Trojans for the NAIA Tournament Round of 16 from March 20th to 21st. Â
