CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – After the Tigers snapped their 14-game win streak over the weekend, they returned home for a mid-week game against the Union Bulldogs. The Tigers got back on track and won 8-3 against the Bulldogs.
Ryan McFarland got the nod for the Tigers, making his third start and eighth appearance of the season. The right-hander was dominant against the Bulldogs, as he pitched four scoreless innings without allowing a runner to reach second base. The Bulldogs' leadoff man reached safely in the second and third innings, but two key double-plays by the Tigers' defense allowed McFarland to walk off with nobody on base. McFarland finished his outing, allowing four hits with no walks while picking up a strikeout.
With the first shut-down inning by McFarland, the Tigers looked to take the lead early. After two quick outs, Zane Skansi kept the inning alive with an infield single. Antony Gilbert put the Tigers on the board with a moonshot two-run homerun that hooked around the left field foul pole.
The Tigers' offense went quiet in the second and third innings, and Gilbert got them going again with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth. Bret Bowers followed Gilbert with a walk, and a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position. Tanner Park and Lorenzo Gonzolez got the job done with a pair of sac-flies that brought both runners home.
Chase Tucker took over for McFarland in the top of the fifth inning, making his ninth appearance of the season. In need of a scoreless inning to help build momentum, Tucker retired the side in order and picked up a strikeout.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Trent Buchanan found his way on after getting plunked, and Skansi gave the Tigers another baserunner with a walk. Gilbert replaced Skansi with a fielder's choice, and Bowers walked to load the bases with two outs. The Tigers were unable to capitalize on the free bases and left the inning empty-handed.
Unable to get anything going, the Bulldogs looked to punch back in the top of the sixth inning. The Bulldogs managed their first runner in scoring position with a pair of singles. With two outs, an RBI single put the Bulldogs on the board, though Tucker was able to escape the inning without allowing further damage.
With their lead cut to three runs, the Tigers looked to add some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jaxson Grubbs and Henry Wright got the offense going with a couple of one-out singles. Reid Sturn came in to pinch run for Grubbs, and both runners executed a double steal. The catcher tried to hose Wright at second, but the ball went into center field and scored Sturn easily. Joaquin Hernandez kept the line moving with a walk, and Wright advanced to third with a stolen base. Hernandez followed suit and swiped second base, then Buchanan scored both runners on an error by the third baseman. Buchanan wound up on third base after the error, setting up Skansi to bring him home with a groundout to cap off the four-spot.
As the game seemed to be running away from the Bulldogs, they stayed in the fight in the top of the seventh inning. After Tucker retired the first two batters, three singles in a row loaded the bases and forced the Tigers to go to their bullpen. Jackson Dollar took over for Tucker, making his eighth season appearance. After plunking the first batter he faced, Dollar was able to escape the jam with a flyout.
The Tigers' offense couldn't get anything going in the bottom of the seventh, which brought Ethan Wood to the mound in the top of the eighth. Making his sixth appearance of the season, the righty retired the side in order while picking up a strikeout.
The Bulldogs responded with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth, bringing Wood back out to secure the victory. After a leadoff walk, the Bulldogs collected their third run of the game with a double to center field. Wood regained his groove and retired the next three hitters while picking up two more strikeouts.
The Tigers won the game with eight runs on six hits with no errors, while the Bulldogs lost with three runs on 11 hits and three errors.
The Tigers will resume conference play this weekend with a three-game series against the Georgetown Tigers. Game one will be played on Friday, March 21st, with an anticipated start time of 2 p.m. ET.
