Three-game series ends in favor of Patriots after day two losses

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The #25 Lady Tigers wrapped up their three-game series against the #4 Cumberlands Patriots this afternoon, but it was not the outcome they hoped for. After falling in both games of today's doubleheader, Campbellsville comes up short in the series sweep.

GAME ONE: Campbellsville 1, Patriots 5

In the first game, both teams stayed scoreless through two innings, struggling to get on base; however, Cumberlands got on the scoreboard in the third inning, scoring five runs thanks to key hits and a defensive mistake. Campbellsville's offense had a tough time finding a rhythm, managing just a few hits throughout the game.

In the fifth inning, Campbellsville got on the board when Selynna Metcalfe walked, moved around the bases, and was brought home by a single from Camille Conkright. The Lady Tigers' defense and pitching held firm the rest of the way, keeping Cumberlands from adding more runs.

Despite a late push by the Lady Tigers, including holding Cumberlands scoreless after the third inning, Campbellsville could not string together enough hits to mount a comeback and fell short in the first game of the day to the Patriots, 5-1.

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 5, Patriots 6

The Lady Tigers struggled early, failing to score in the first and second innings. Cumberlands also had a challenging first inning but broke through in the fourth inning with a few runs, making it 4-0. In the fifth, Campbellsville got on the board. Jessie Daniels hit a solo home run, but that was the only run the Lady Tigers managed in the inning. The Patriots answered back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two more runs, including a home run by Johnson, which extended their lead to 6-1.

In the seventh inning, the Lady Tigers made a substantial play. With the bases loaded, Ashby Murt hit a 2-RBI single to the right field, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Then, Metcalfe went deep with a home run and hit a 2-RBI homer, closing the gap to 6-4. Despite leaving three runners on base and fighting hard, Campbellsville could not score again, and Cumberlands held on to win 6-4.

The home runs from Daniels and Metcalfe gave them a shot at a comeback, but ultimately, Cumberlands' early lead and timely hitting secured them the win.

The Lady Tigers will return to action on Wednesday, April 2nd, for a doubleheader against Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. The games are set to begin at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. ET.

  • For game one, Camille Conkright drove the only run in the fifth inning, and Korey Harris added one of the team's two hits. Selynna Metcalfe and Rylee Warner reached base on walks, while Jessie Daniels made seven putouts at first base.
  • In game two, Campbellsville scored five runs on seven hits with no errors, led by Daniels' two runs, one homer, and one RBI,  Metcalfe's two RBIs, and Emily Reynolds' two hits. Cumberlands won 6-5, scoring six runs on nine hits with one error, highlighted by Johnson's two RBIs, two singles, and McDonald's two hits and solid defense.
  • Campbellsville and the University of the Cumberlands have battled since 1999, with Campbellsville's biggest win being 15-0 in 2011, though they are now on a four-game losing streak against the Patriots.
