GEORGETOWN, Ky. – In their third meeting of the season, the Campbellsville Tigers once again proved dominant over the Cumberland Phoenix, earning a 3-0 sweep in the River States Conference semifinals and securing their spot in the championship match. The semifinal was held at Great Crossing High School, where the Tigers showcased a poised and powerful performance to move one step closer to a conference title.
Campbellsville opened the match on fire, with Ayoube Hamadache and Pedro Zavatini setting the tone offensively. Although Cumberland tied the score early at 4-4, the Tigers quickly regained control with key contributions from Mason McKinney and John Marcos Gonzalez. The Phoenix closed the gap late in the set, prompting a Campbellsville timeout at 18-16. After tying it at 19, Alonzo Vega stepped up with a clutch ace that forced a Cumberland timeout, and the Tigers closed the set strong, taking it 25-22.
In the second set, Cumberland struck first, but Hamadache answered with a kill to spark the Tigers. The set remained tight until Campbellsville went on a four-point run, fueled by back-to-back kills from Gonzalez, forcing another Phoenix timeout. Campbellsville's middles continued to shine as they extended the lead, but errors late in the set allowed Cumberland to climb back. Still, a timely kill from Denzel Madrigal shifted momentum back to the Tigers, who held on for a 25-23 win.
Looking for the sweep, Campbellsville opened the third set with an aggressive approach. After an early exchange of points, the Tigers caught fire again with a 4-0 run, capped by a Gonzalez ace. Another four-point burst out of a timeout, led by McKinney and Madrigal, pushed the Tigers ahead 18-11. Cumberland put together a small rally near the end, but it wasn't enough to slow down Campbellsville's offense, and the Tigers sealed the match with a 25-20 win.
Campbellsville will face Georgetown College in the River States Conference Championship tomorrow, April 19, at 2 p.m. ET.
