CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – After a long week of no baseball, the Campbellsville Tigers returned to the diamond for a mid-week match-up against the Kentucky Christian Knights. The Tigers continued their undefeated streak against the Knights, winning 7-3.
On the mound for the Tigers was Ryan McFarland, making his fifth start and tenth appearance of the season. Allowing just two runs over his last nine innings, McFarland came in hot against the Knights. Although the righty had everything working in his arsenal, the defensive blunders forced him to labor through his start. McFarland kept the Knights hitless and scoreless through his first three innings of work, though the Knights worked baserunners in the first and second innings on errors.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Knights' leadoff man reached on the Tigers' third error of the game. McFarland looked to be out of trouble with a routine double-play ball, but it was bobbled, and the Tigers could only get the out at first. A one-out single up the middle put runners at the corners, and another defensive error allowed the Knights to draw first blood. With four errors in four innings, the Tigers cleaned it up and turned a double play to help McFarland escape the inning with minimal damage.
It was a slow start for the Tigers' offense as they were retired in order through the first three innings. A one-out double from Trent Buchanan broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth inning, and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Knights handed the Tigers their first run as the pitcher balked to bring Buchanan home.
Taking over for McFarland in the top of the fifth inning was Tristin Crusenberry, making his eighth appearance of the season. The righty picked up a big shut-down inning for the Tigers while striking out two.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tigers' offense decided it was time to lock in. Tanner Park found his way on with a one-out walk, and Lorenzo Gonzalez followed up with a single to left field. Trey Proctor pinch-ran for Gonzalez, and then Jaxson Grubbs singled to left field to load the bases. The Tigers took the lead thanks to a walk drawn by Henry Wright, and added another after a walk to Yosuke Fujie. Buchanan did his job and scored Grubbs with a sac-fly to right field. With runners at the corners, an errant pickoff attempt scored Wright easily and advanced Fujie to third. Zane Skansi kept the inning alive with a two-out walk and stole second base. Fujie scored on the throw to second, capping off a five-run inning for the Tigers.
Crusenberry continued on the mound in the top of the sixth inning and ran into trouble after a leadoff double. A flyout to left field allowed the runner to advance to third base, and a walk put runners at the corners. The first-base runner stole second to take the double play away, which proved crucial. The next batter grounded out to second base, scoring a run and advancing the second-base runner to third. With two outs, another defensive error allowed the runner on third to score. The chaos ended thanks to Gonzalez throwing out the runner, trying to steal second.
With their lead shortened, the Tigers aimed to add on in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Park smacked a double off the left-center field wall. Then, with two outs, Grubbs clutched up with a single to left field and scored Park. Wright kept the inning alive with a single to right center, though both runners were left stranded.
Ryan Fischer took over for Crusenberry in the top of the seventh inning, making his second appearance of the season. The Knights threatened with a two-out walk, but Fischer was able to record a clean inning while collecting two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Skansi found his way on with a one-out single, but a double play kept the Tigers from adding on.
With Fischer continuing on the bump in the top of the eighth inning, the Knights threatened to score after a hit batter and a single up the middle. The Tigers were forced deeper into their bullpen and called for Jackson Dollar. Making his ninth appearance of the season, Dollar put out the fire with a flyout and a double play.
Looking to produce some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Brock Brubaker reached on an error to start the frame. After the next two Tigers were retired, Niklas Rossius passed the torch with a single to left field, though the Tigers left both runners stranded.
Digging even deeper into their bullpen, the Tigers called for Ethan Wood to take over for Dollar, making his eighth appearance of the season. The righty recorded a scoreless inning and secured the victory while picking up a strikeout.
The Tigers won the game with seven runs on eight hits with five errors, and the Knights lost with three runs on three hits with two errors.
