15-hit game drives Tigers over #10 Grenadiers

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Campbellsville Tigers hit the road for a mid-week match-up against the #10 Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers on Tuesday. After getting swept over the weekend, the Tigers looked to get back in the win column and build some momentum. The Tigers got the job done, winning the game 11-8.

In the top of the first inning, Tate Wischnack got the offense going with a one-out double to right-center field. After a passed ball advanced Wischnack to third base, Zane Skansi put the Tigers on the board with an RBI-groundout.

On the mound for the Tigers was Ryan McFarland, making his sixth start and 14th appearance of the season. The Grenadiers came out hot against the righty, as the first batter singled to right field and then stole second base. The next batter tied the game with a single up the middle, and then back-to-back singles loaded the bases. The Grenadiers plated two more runs with another single up the middle, but McFarland responded with a strikeout. The righty walked the next batter to reload the bases and punched back again with another strikeout. The next batter cleared the bases with a triple, putting the Grenadiers up 6-1. The Tigers were forced to go to their bullpen and called for Chase Tucker to take over. Making his 13th appearance of the season, Tucker walked the first batter to put runners at the corners. The runner on first tried to steal second, but the Tigers' catcher, Trent Buchanan, threw him out to end the inning.

Now chasing the lead, the Tigers looked to hang a crooked number in the top of the second inning. Antony Gilbert led off with a walk, and then Yosuke Fujie came up with a one-out single to add another baserunner. Buchanan followed up with a walk to load the bases and was pinch-run for by Trey Proctor. Henry Wright clutched up for the Tigers with a single through the left side, plating Gilbert and Fujie. An error by the shortstop allowed Lorenzo Gonzalez to reach and reload the bases, still with one out. Following the Grenadiers making a pitching change, Wischnack ripped a double down the leftfield line that brought home Proctor and Wright. The next two Tigers were retired, but they had cut the lead to one run.

Tucker continued on the mound in the bottom of the second inning, needing to hang a big zero. The righty retired the first two men he faced, and the Grenadiers threatened with a double to left field. Tucker bared down, though, and managed to keep them scoreless.

In the top of the third inning, the Grenadiers' second error of the game allowed Tanner Park to find his way on base. Fujie collected his second hit of the game with a single through the right side that advanced Park to second base. Buchanan stepped up and smacked a ground-rule double down the right-field line to tie the game. Both runners were left stranded, but the Tigers' offense made it a brand new ballgame.

Needing to keep the Tigers in the game, Tucker returned to the mound for the bottom of the third inning. The righty retired the first two batters he faced while picking up his first strikeout. The Grenadiers threatened again with a two-out single, but Tucker kept his composure and hung another huge zero.

The Tigers' offense went quietly in the top of the fourth inning, bringing Tucker back to the bump for the bottom of the frame. Tucker kept his rhythm and rolled through the inning with another scoreless frame.

After the first two Tigers were retired in the top of the fifth inning, Fujie tallied his third hit of the game with a double down the leftfield line. However, the Tigers' offense was unable to bring him home.

Tucker continued on the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning but ran into trouble after a leadoff double. The righty walked the next batter and then plunked the next man to load the bases with no outs. The Grenadiers broke the tie with a single to right field, but the Tigers collected the first out thanks to Wright throwing out the runner trying to score from second base. With runners at first and second, the Tigers called for Jackson Dollar to take the mound for his 13th season appearance. Dollar successfully struck out the first batter he faced and retired the next man with a lineout to center field.

Chasing the lead again, the Tigers aimed to get ahead in the top of the sixth inning. Wright led off with a single to left field, and then Wischnack moved him up with a one-out single to right-center. The Tigers took the lead for good thanks to Skansi's towering homerun to right-center, his 10th of the season.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers dug deeper into their bullpen for Joe McBride to make his 13th appearance. The righty retired the first batter he faced and then walked the next man. Another walk gave the Grenadiers a runner in scoring position, but the second out was made with a fly ball to centerfield. McBride struggled to command the zone and loaded the bases with his third walk. The righty bared down and struck out the final batter of the inning to maintain the lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Fujie collected his fourth hit with a one-out double to centerfield but was thrown out trying to stretch a triple. Buchanan followed up with a single, though he was left stranded.

McBride continued on the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning, hoping to better command the zone. Though he surrendered a one-out single, the righty found his groove and left the runner stranded with a strikeout and a groundout.

Gonzalez led off the top of the eighth inning with a hit-by-pitch, and then Wischnack picked up his fourth hit of the game with a single through the left side. Skansi followed up with a single up the middle that brought home Gonzalez. Wischnack advanced to third base on a throwing error by the catcher, and then Jaxson Grubbs made it hurt with a sac-fly to leftfield that brought him home. The next three Tigers were sat down in order, but the damage was done.

Taking the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning was Logan MacNiel, making his 12th appearance of the season for the Tigers. The righty retired the side in order with no problem.

In the top of the ninth inning, Buchanan tallied his third hit of the game with a one-out infield single and was pinch-run for by Trey Proctor. Though the speedster stole second and third base to give the Tigers a scoring chance, he was left stranded.

Down to their last three outs, the Grenadiers made one final push to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. MacNiel continued on the mound but lost his rhythm and walked the bases loaded with no outs. The righty punched back with a big strikeout, and the Grenadiers plated a run with a groundout to second base. MacNiel finished the job with an emphatic strikeout to secure the Tigers' victory.

The Tigers won the game with 11 runs on 15 hits and no errors, and the Grenadiers lost with eight runs on 11 hits and four errors.

With bad weather in the forecast, the Tigers are set to begin their final conference series against the Lindsey Wilson Blue Devils on Thursday, April 24th. Game times are to be determined.

  • The Tigers and the Grenadiers have been facing each other since 1990. Campbellsville holds a record of 23-16 over Indiana University Southeast, with the last ten match-ups landing equal at 5-5.
