LEBANON, Tenn. – The #25 Lady Tigers took the road to battle the Cumberland University Phoenix in the first of their three-game series. Campbellsville could not preserve their lead in the closing innings, losing to Cumberland, 3-2.
Emily Reynolds and Jessie Daniels opened the game, singling through the left side. The Lady Tigers loaded their bases after Rylee Warner reached base by walking. However, Campbellsville was put away before being able to score. The Phoenix came into the bottom of the first with three back-to-back hits, which resulted in the game's first run.
Ashby Murt began the second inning with a single to right center. However, the Lady Tigers collected three outs before reaching the plate. Cumberland's share of the second inning was also short-lived, put away in a three-up, three-down fashion.
Much like the first, Reynolds and Daniels began the inning with hits. After a double to center field from Caroline Pitcock, Reynolds tied the score with Campbelsville's first run. Once again, the Phoenix were put away in a three-up, three-down style during the bottom of the second.
Murt and Hannah Hackworth reached base via a walk and on a fielder's choice as they stepped up to the plate at the beginning of the top of the third. Hackworth took the advantage with another run after Korey Harris singled to center field. Cumberland was yet to score, once again put away swiftly during the bottom of the inning.
Although Warner singled to left field in the fifth, the Lady Tigers could not collect another run before switching sides with the Phoenix. Cumberland had the same luck, doubling to right center to begin their share of the inning but unable to score before being put away.
Two Lady Tigers reached base throughout the top of the sixth but did not cross home plate. The Phoenix retaliated with a 2-RBI home run to close the inning. Campbellsville attempted to strike back and reclaim the lead during the seventh inning and, even though two Lady Tigers walked to base, they could not score before the end of the contest.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 8th, to finish the series against the Cumberland University Phoenix with a doubleheader beginning at 1 & 3 p.m. ET.
