Mercy-rule victory over Blue Raiders keeps Tigers alive in MSC Tournament

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—After an opening-round loss in the Mid-South Conference Tournament, the Campbellsville Tigers bounced back for an elimination game against the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders. The Tigers were 2-1 against the Blue Raiders during the regular season and aimed to add another to the win column to stay alive. The Tigers got the job done in mercy-rule fashion and won the game 13-1.

Following the offensive struggles in the opening round, the Tigers looked to flip the script and set the tone in the top of the first inning. After the first two men were retired, Antony Gilbert kept the inning alive with a double to the left-center field gap. Lorenzo Gonzalez followed up with a walk, and then Yosuke Fujie made it hurt with a long home run over the left-center field wall for his 13th of the season. Trent Buchanan kept the line moving with a single up the middle, and then Henry Wright passed the torch with a walk, though both men were left stranded.

Toeing the rubber for the Tigers was Brody Forno, making his ninth start and 13th appearance of the season. In the bottom of the first inning, Forno retired the first batter and then surrendered a walk. The righty punched back with a strikeout, and then a single to right field gave the Blue Raiders a runner in scoring position. It was no matter for Forno, as he punched back again with his second strikeout to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, the first two Tigers were retired again, but then Tate Wischnack torched a triple to deep center field to give the offense a shot. Gilbert kept the line moving with a walk, and then the Blue Raiders' pitcher balked, plating Wischnack and advancing Gilbert to second base. Gonzalez reached on an infield single and was pinch-run for by Trey Proctor. Proctor immediately stole second base to take away the force play, but the Tigers couldn't cash in either baserunner.

Forno continued on the bump for the Tigers in the bottom of the second inning and struck out the leadoff hitter. The next batter singled through the left side, but then Forno collected the second out with a flyout to center field. The Blue Raiders heightened the threat with a single through the left side, but Forno was able to hang the big zero on a ground ball to second base.

Other than a single from Buchanan and a walk from Tanner Park, the Tigers couldn't get anything going in the top of the third inning. Forno went back to the mound for the bottom of the third and rolled through the Blue Raiders. The righty struck out the first two batters on six pitches, surrendered a walk, and picked up the third out with a pop-fly to third base.

After going scoreless in the third inning, the Tigers looked to make an adjustment and hang a crooked number in the top of the fourth. Wischnack and Gilbert kicked things off with a pair of walks, and then Gonzalez loaded the bases with a bunt single. A passed ball scored Wischnack and moved everybody up, and then Fujie walked to reload the bases. Buchanan made the free bases hurt and demolished a grand slam way out of left-center field for his second homer of the season. Still with no outs, Wright reached on an error by the shortstop, and then Park grounded into a fielder's choice and replaced Wright at first. Grubbs advanced Park into scoring position with a walk, and then Zane Skansi singled through the left side to bring him home, capping off a huge six-spot.

Forno continued on the mound for the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth inning and maintained his groove. The righty retired the first two batters on a pair of flyouts, surrendered a walk, and then picked up the third out with a pop-fly to the catcher.

In the top of the fifth inning, the game was paused for a couple of hours due to a storm cell passing through. When the Tigers resumed play, Gonzalez led off with a walk and was pinch-run for by Proctor. The speedster immediately swiped second base, and then Fujie followed up with a walk. Buchanan made the free bases hurt again and unloaded on a no-doubt bomb to left field for his second homer of the game and third of the season. Wright kept the line moving with a single up the middle, but the next three Tigers were retired in order to finish the inning.

Due to the rain delay, the Tigers could no longer pitch Forno, so they called for Shoki Fukui to take over on the mound. Making his sixth appearance of the season, the lefty retired his first two batters with a flyout and a groundout. The Blue Raiders refused to go down without a fight, and they worked a walk, a single, and another walk to load the bases. Fukui bared down and kept the shutout going with a flyout to right field.

Gilbert got things going for the Tigers' offense in the top of the sixth inning after he reached on a one-out single. Gilbert took second base on a wild pitch, and then Gonzalez singled to left field to move him to third. Unfortunately, the next two batters were retired, leaving Gilbert and Gonzalez stranded.

Fukui continued on the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning and retired the leadoff hitter. The next batter poked a double down the left field line, and then the next man grounded out to third base. The Blue Raiders scored their first run of the game with a single to left field that plated the runner on second. Fukui limited the damage, though, and recorded the third out with a foul-out to third base.

The Tigers were retired in order in the top of the seventh inning, bringing Fukui back to the mound to close the game. The lefty recorded a perfect inning with three flyouts in a row, securing the mercy-rule victory for the Tigers.

The Tigers won the game with 13 runs on 13 hits with no errors, and the Blue Raiders lost with one run on six hits and two errors.

The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow, May 2nd, with another elimination game. They will face either Cumberland University or Freed-Hardeman University. The game will be played at 3:30 p.m. ET.
