Tigers earn four individual champions at the Mid-South Conference Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, KY – The Tigers began championship season with a third-place finish at the Mid-South Conference Championships over the weekend.

Campbellsville was led by four different champions over the course of the two-day meet. On day one, Dominic Malel competed in a strategic race and won the 10,000m run on the final lap of the race where he outkicked his opponent in the final 300m of the race in 31:32.13. Later in the day, Martin Batel made his winning move in the final 800m of the 3,000m steeplechase with a winning time of 9:24.04. 

Schavon Carr won his first conference title of his career in the 110m hurdles. Carr beat out Cumberlands Nigel Steenwinkle at the line in 14.96. CamRon Hamby was the final champion for the team in the triple jump. Hamby has dominated the jumps all four years of his career, and his winning jump of 15.24m moved him up to 3rd in the country. 

The rest of the meet, Campbellsville had key performances to score points on the board. In the 100m, Jason Baskerville qualified for the 100m final, where he placed 6th overall in 10.68, only .05 shy of his school record. He ran 10.66 in the preliminary round. Zachary Phelps continues to show gradual improvement throughout the course of his career. Phelps was 6th in the 200m final, where he ran 21.88 on a (1.7 wind). In the 400m finals, he ran a lifetime best of 48.29 and improved his school record by .14, placing 4th. Kamarion Ward earned one point in the 400m final placing 8th in 48.88. 

On the distance side of events, Alex Steen scored three points in the 800m run in 1:57.52. Lukas Smithson and Ethan Johnson finished back-to-back in the 1500m run. Smithson was 7th, running 4:01.22, while Johnson crossed the line in 8th in 4:08.24. Batel nearly had his second conference title of the meet in the 5,000m run. After a slow first mile, the field spread out quickly to a three-man race. Batel ended up being the runner-up in the event at 15:37.46. Following Malel's win in the 10,000m run, Samuel Bennett returned to the track after his Boston Marathon debut to finish 4th place in 33:17.77. Samuel Larson ran a personal best in the 3,000m steeplechase to finish in 6th at 10:09.16. 

William Riley and Zahnte' Brown added three points to the scoreboard in the 110m hurdles. Riley finished 7th in the race in 17.63, and Brown crossed in 8th in 19.70 to make the event total of 13 points following Carr's ten points from the victory. 

Across the three relays, Campbellsville totaled 16 points. In the 4x100m relay, Phelps, Carr, Isaiah Johnson, and Baskerville finished the race in 3rd at 41.30. The 4x400m relay narrowly missed a podium finish, placing 4th with Chris Thomas, Phelps, Matthias Brice, and Ward crossing in 3:17.89. The final relay of the 4x800m relay earned the bronze medal. The team made of Brice, Dakota Brady, Steen, and Smithson crossed the line at 8:00.86. 

In the field events, Hamby had help in the triple jump, with seven more points adding to the total in the event. Corey Smith II placed 5th at 14.20m, and David Young was behind Smith in 6th at 14.15m. 

Mavrik Hall bested his school record in the shot put on Monday. Hall had a big throw come off his second attempt, landing at 15.50m, earning him the silver medal. Joel Roberts and Jonah Oliver finished in back-to-back positions. Roberts was 6th overall at 12.43m, and Oliver placed 7th with a mark of 12.30m. Oliver led the way in the discus throw where he had a 4th place mark of 41.58m. Jeremiah Schine earned the team one point in the discus, placing 8th at 37.58m. Oliver, Roberts, and Hall combined for 12 points in the hammer throw. Oliver finished in the bronze medal position in 43.76m, Roberts was 4th in the standings at 42.63m, and Hall placed 8th in 39.42m. 

As a team, Campbellsville placed 3rd with 132 team points. They beat out Cumberland University in 4th place, who had 128 team points. 

The Tigers will have short rest as they will travel to the NCCAA Outdoor Championships May 7-9 in the Columbia, South Carolina hosted by Columbia International University.  Campbellsville Tigers Story Banner 24-25
  • Hamby will look to add to his impressive resume with two meets to go in his career. He has collected four Mid-South Conference titles, three NCCAA titles, 12 NCCAA All-American honors, and two NAIA All-American honors.
  • This is the most champions the Tigers have ever had at a Mid-South Conference Outdoor meet.
