PIPPA PASSES, Ky. – The Campbellsville Tigers faced off against the Alice Lloyd Eagles in the Mid-East Region Tournament Championship. Historically, the Tigers were 1-4 against the Eagles, with their only victory in 2017. The Tigers won the championship game 18-0 and will move on to play in the NCCAA World Series.
Tristin Crusenberry took the mound for the Tigers, making his 12th start of the season. Crusenberry was dominant for the Tigers, as he threw five shutout innings while picking up four strikeouts. Other than a double in the second inning and a walk in the third, the righty retired 15 of the 17 batters he faced, taking the game into the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, Trent Buchanan got the Tigers' offense going with a one-out double and then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Zane Skansi helped the Tigers draw first blood with a single to left field that plated Buchanan. With two outs, Yosuke Fujie kept the inning alive with a walk, bringing Tanner Park to the plate. Park made it hurt and unloaded on a no-doubt three-run rocket to left field for his tenth home run of the season. Jaxson Grubbs doubled with one out in the bottom of the second inning, though he was left stranded.
As Crusenberry continued rolling through the Eagles' lineup, the Tigers looked to blow the game open in the bottom of the third inning. Skansi kicked things off for the Tigers' offense and demolished a leadoff bomb to left field for his 12th of the season. After the next two Tigers were retired, Park absolutely crushed a solo-homerun to left-center field for his second of the game and 11th of the season. Henry Wright followed up with an infield single to shortstop, and then Brock Brubaker kept the line moving with a walk. Grubbs cashed in another run for the Tigers and plated Wright with a single to left field. Still with two outs, Lorenzo Gonzalez clutched up with a double to deep center field that plated Brubaker and Grubbs. Looking to keep adding on, Buchanan smacked a home run to left field for his fourth of the season. Skansi followed up with another no-doubt bomb to go back-to-back, capping off the eight-run inning with his second home run of the frame and 13th of the season.
After the big inning, Crusenberry recorded another scoreless frame in the top of the fourth inning, and then the Tigers were retired in order in the bottom half.
Following Crusenberry's final inning of his outing, Grubbs got the Tigers' offense going again with a one-out single to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning. James Teets followed up with a walk, and then Skansi loaded the bases with a single, his fourth hit of the game. Antony Gilbert tacked on two more runs for the Tigers with a single to right field before the inning's end.
Taking over for Crusenberry in the top of the sixth inning was Ethan Wood, making his 14th appearance of the season. The tall righty walked the leadoff man but locked in with a strikeout and escaped the inning with a double play.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers were still unsatisfied with their lead and looked to drive the dagger with another crooked number. Park led off the frame with a double to left field for his third extra-base hit of the game. The next two Tigers were retired, bringing Bret Bowers to the plate. Bowers displayed his Bower-power and tattooed a no-doubt missile to dead center field for his eighth long ball of the season. Teets followed up with a double to left field, and then Nick Hagen doubled to left field to bring him home. Still with two outs, the Tigers let one of their pitchers, Chase Tucker, step into the box. Tucker took full advantage of the opportunity and smacked a single into center field for his first knock of the season. With runners at the corners, Gilbert plated Hagen with a single to center field. With runners at the corners again, the Tigers called for another pitcher, Ryan McFarland, to step up to the plate, though he struck out to end the inning.
Taking over for Wood in the top of the seventh inning was Logan MacNiel, making his 15th appearance of the season. The first man MacNiel faced poked a single into left field. The next two batters he faced grounded into back-to-back fielder's choices, with the Tigers collecting both outs at second base. MacNiel finished the Eagles off with a strikeout.
The Tigers won the championship with 18 runs on 20 hits with no errors, while the Eagles were shut out with three hits and no errors.
With this victory, the Tigers advance to the NCCAA World Series, which begins May 17th. Game times and opponents are to be determined, but the Tigers will head to Kansas City, Missouri, for the tournament.
