NASHVILLE, Tenn. / LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Campbellsville University Track & Field teams faced a massive test of depth and talent this weekend, splitting squads to compete at the prestigious Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville and the Bellarmine Open in Louisville.
- David Young soared to a top-10 finish in the triple jump at Vanderbilt with a mark of 14.53m (47' 8"), securing the Tigers' highest placement in the Division I-heavy field.
- Makiyah Allen headlined the squad's efforts at the Bellarmine Open, placing 4th in the women's 60-meter hurdles finals with a time of 8.93 seconds.
- Chris Thomas broke the 50-second barrier in the 400-meter dash at Vanderbilt, clocking a 49.95 to lead the CU sprint squad.
- JaQuez Campbell proved versatile in Nashville, competing in the long jump (6.68m) and advancing to the 60-meter dash semifinals (7.08).
- Nathan Sury completed a grueling distance double at Vanderbilt, contesting both the 1,000-meter run (2:31.86) and the one-mile run (4:29.40) against SEC competition.
- Facing fields loaded with SEC and Division I talent, the Tigers held their own, led by a standout field event performance from David Young and a finals appearance by Makiyah Allen.
- The Tigers will look to build on these marks when they travel to Danville, Kentucky, next weekend for the Centre Indoor Showcase on Saturday, January 24.
Vanderbilt Invitational (Nashville, Tenn.)
At Vanderbilt, the Tigers squared off against top-tier programs including Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Georgia Tech.
In the field events,
David Young delivered the weekend's highlight performance in the men's triple jump. Young leaped 14.53 meters (47 feet, 8 inches) to secure a 10th-place finish, cementing himself as a competitor to watch this season.
JaQuez Campbell also represented the Tigers in the pits, placing 12th in the long jump with a mark of 6.68 meters (21 feet, 11 inches).
On the track, Campbell showed his speed in the short sprints. He qualified for the 60-meter dash semifinals with a prelim time of 7.03 seconds, ultimately finishing his semi-heat in 7.08. Teammate
Jason Baskerville also showed consistency, clocking a 6.97 in the prelims before running 7.00 in the semifinals.
In the 400-meter dash,
Chris Thomas led the way for Campbellsville, dipping under the 50-second mark with a time of 49.95 to finish 23rd overall. He was followed by
Matthias Brice (51.21) and
Zachary Phelps (51.68).
In the distance events, Nathan Sury took on a challenging double. He finished the men's 1,000-meter run in 2:31.86 and returned to the track for the one-mile run, crossing the line in 4:29.40.
The women's squad in Nashville was led by
Makiyah Allen, who contested the 60-meter hurdles prelims (9.04), the 60-meter dash prelims (7.98), and the 200-meter dash (26.57). In the field,
Dasia Garland recorded a mark of 10.55 meters in the triple jump.
Bellarmine Open (Louisville, Ky.)
A contingent of Tigers also traveled to the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center for the Bellarmine Open on Friday.
Makiyah Allen had a busy weekend, as results indicate she also competed in Louisville, where she secured a top-5 finish. Allen placed 4th overall in the women's 60-meter hurdles finals with a time of 8.93 seconds. She also clocked a 7.98 in the 60-meter dash.
On the men's side at Bellarmine,
JaQuez Campbell posted a quick 6.97 in the 60-meter dash.
Isaiah Johnson (7.13) and Treshawn Smith (7.35) also contested the straightaway sprint.
In the 200-meter dash,
Isaiah Johnson led the CU effort with a time of 23.31, followed closely by Neo Charge at 23.47. Charge also put in work in the long jump, recording a best leap of 6.61 meters.
In the throwing circle,
Joel Roberts represented the Tigers in the shot put, recording a toss of 11.42 meters. On the women's side,
Kayla Barr threw 11.44 meters in the shot put to finish 6th.
