MOBILE, Ala. — The third-seeded Campbellsville University Lady Tigers opened their NAIA National Championship Opening Round campaign against the second-seeded Eastern Oregon Mountaineers on Monday afternoon in Mobile, Alabama. Despite staging a dramatic late-game rally to build a four-run advantage, Campbellsville ultimately suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 walk-off defeat following a final-inning home run by Eastern Oregon.
  • First baseman Jessie Daniels paced the Campbellsville offense by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, while also leading the team defensively with five putouts.
  • Shortstop Korey Harris sparked the lineup by hitting an RBI triple and scoring two runs, while third baseman Madison Reed ripped a two-run double to finish with a pair of runs driven in.
  • In the circle, starting pitcher Emma Markham and reliever Ellie Coley combined to strike out eight Eastern Oregon batters over 6.1 innings of work.
  • Following the opening-round defeat, the third-seeded Lady Tigers will look to keep their season alive in an elimination matchup against fifth-seeded Truett McConnell University on Tuesday, May 12, at 1 p.m. ET.
In the top of the first inning, Lydia Jones drew a two-out walk, and Jessie Daniels reached on a fielder's choice, but the Lady Tigers were unable to push a run across the plate. Eastern Oregon quickly capitalized in the bottom half of the frame against Campbellsville starting pitcher Emma Markham. Following a leadoff walk, Raygun Klippert stole second base but was thrown out attempting to advance to third. Isabella Lauerman then drew a walk and Lexi Grumbois singled to center field, setting the table for left fielder Hope Burke, who launched a three-run home run over the left-field fence to give the Mountaineers an early 3-0 lead.

Campbellsville looked to respond at the top of the second inning when Rylee Warner was hit by a pitch and Jillian Jeffries singled through the left side, but the runners were stranded to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. Markham settled into a strong rhythm during the bottom of the second, overpowering the Mountaineers' hitters to deliver a quick 1-2-3 shutdown frame featuring a pair of strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers broke through in the top of the third inning. Korey Harris drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a groundout by Jones. Daniels then stepped into the box and ripped an RBI double to left-center, bringing Harris home to trim the deficit to 3-1. However, Eastern Oregon managed to get the run back in the bottom half of the frame. After Lauerman walked and advanced to third on a passed ball and a fielding error by Harris at shortstop, she crossed the plate on a wild pitch to extend the Mountaineers' lead to 4-1. Reliever Ellie Coley took over in the circle for Markham and successfully limited further damage, striking out two batters to end the threat.

Similar to earlier frames, Campbellsville generated base traffic at the top of the fourth when Warner drew a walk, and Jeffries reached on a fielder's choice, but neither was able to advance further. Coley maintained her exceptional command in the bottom of the fourth, retiring Eastern Oregon in consecutive order to shift momentum back toward the Campbellsville dugout.

The Lady Tiger offense erupted in the top of the fifth inning. Following base hits by Ashlan Estep and Jones, Eastern Oregon made a pitching change to bring in Camille Schmitz. After Macy McCoy drew a two-out walk to load the bases, Madison Reed delivered a clutch two-run double to right field, scoring Estep and Jones to narrow the gap to a single run. On the same sequence, a fielding error by the Eastern Oregon center fielder allowed McCoy to race home, tying the contest at 4-4 while Reed advanced to third. Coley continued her seamless relief work in the bottom of the fifth, pitching another perfect 1-2-3 inning to keep the Mountaineers completely off balance.

Campbellsville maintained its aggressive momentum to stage a four-run explosion in the top of the sixth inning. After Jeffries singled and pinch-runner Riley Sprowles was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Hackworth, Harris laced an RBI triple to right-center to score Sprowles and give the Lady Tigers their first lead of the afternoon at 5-4. Estep followed with a bunt single and promptly stole second base, setting the stage for Jones to draw a walk that loaded the bases. Daniels then delivered another critical blow, hammering a two-run double to right-center that brought home Harris and Estep to stretch the advantage to 7-4. Moments later, McCoy executed an RBI fielder's choice bunt to score Jones, pushing Campbellsville ahead 8-4. Eastern Oregon responded in the bottom of the sixth against Coley, utilizing two singles and a two-out, two-run double by pinch-hitter Alexis Blankenship to trim the Lady Tigers' lead to 8-6 entering the final frame.

Campbellsville was unable to add insurance runs at the top of the seventh inning, as relief pitcher Maliyah Mann retired the side in order. In the bottom of the seventh, Eastern Oregon mounted a final charge. Following back-to-back singles by Klippert and Lauerman, Coley induced a flyout from Grumbois for the first out of the inning. However, Burke stepped to the plate and hit her second three-run home run of the game, launching a walk-off shot to right-center to secure the 9-8 victory for the Mountaineers.
