For five full innings, the elimination game was an absolute pitcher's duel. Senior
Emma Markham took the circle for Campbellsville and matched Cumberlands starter Jessica Cord pitch for pitch, constantly pitching her way out of jams to keep the potent Patriots lineup off the scoreboard.
The Lady Tigers threatened early in the top of the first inning when
Ashlan Estep ripped a two-out double to left-center, but she was stranded after a groundout. Campbellsville continued to put the ball in play and drew four walks on the day, but struggled to find the timely hit needed to bring runners home, ultimately leaving seven runners on base throughout the contest.
Estep added a bunt single in the third inning, and
Jessie Daniels laced a two-out double to left-center in the top of the sixth, but the Lady Tigers were continually turned away by the Cumberlands defense.
The scoreless tie was finally broken in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the Patriots capitalized on a pair of costly Campbellsville fielding miscues. The frame began with Cumberlands' Makenzie Henderson reaching first base safely on a throwing error by the shortstop. Following a single to center field by Jenna Fabela, Kristen Smith laid down a perfectly placed RBI bunt single. On the play, an ensuing throwing error by the first baseman allowed a second run to race home, quickly making it 2-0.
With momentum fully shifted, Aniyah White stepped into the box and ripped a two-run single to right-center. Jae Jae Phillips followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score White and cap the four-run barrage, all of which were recorded as unearned runs against Markham.
Junior
Ellie Coley entered in relief to record the final two outs of the sixth inning, but the damage was already done.
In the top of the seventh,
Hannah Hackworth managed to draw a one-out walk to give the Lady Tigers a late baserunner, but a game-ending 4-3 double play officially stamped the 4-0 victory for the Patriots.
Markham was handed the hard-luck loss despite a stellar performance, scattering eight hits and surrendering zero earned runs while striking out six batters over 5.1 innings of work.
