CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University erased a second-half deficit behind goals from
Mark Holton and
Ethan John, with John scoring in the 87th minute to lift the Tigers past the Bethel University Wildcats 3-2 in Mid-South Conference play Thursday at Finley Stadium.
- Campbellsville trailed 2-1 after allowing two goals in the opening 10 minutes, 45 seconds of the second half, but answered twice over the final 23 minutes to complete the comeback.
- Holton entered in the 58th minute and equalized at 67:25, while John came on in the 77th and delivered the game-winner at 86:42.
- All three Campbellsville goals were unassisted. The Tigers opened the scoring through a Bethel own goal before Holton and John recorded their first goals of the match.
- The Tigers increased their attacking output from three first-half shots to eight after halftime, placing four of their five shots on goal during the second period.
- Goalkeeper Malthe Schou made five saves, including three in a scoreless first half and two during Bethel's second-half pressure.
- Campbellsville scored three times from five shots on goal and converted both of its second-half goals after the 57th minute.
- The Tigers remained unbeaten in conference play at 1-0-1 and improved to 3-4-3 overall.
Bethel generated the first opportunity in the fourth minute, but Schou stopped Nobert Ochieng's effort. The Campbellsville goalkeeper added saves against Luiz Antonio Costa Lima and Victor Vilaca Andrade Cardoso to keep the match scoreless through the opening 25 minutes.
Campbellsville moved ahead following
Jon Magnusson's corner kick in the 30th minute. Bethel's Sam Neill redirected the ball into his own net at 30:06, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
The Tigers carried the lead into halftime after holding the Wildcats scoreless on five shots. Campbellsville recorded three attempts and earned two corner kicks during the opening period.
Bethel equalized shortly after the restart when Serzhan Aitzhanov scored unassisted at 48:30. Schou denied Tim Haans in the 55th minute, but Haans converted the Wildcats' next opportunity at 55:45 to move Bethel ahead 2-1.
Holton entered at 57:24 and required less than 10 minutes to make an impact. The forward scored unassisted at 67:25, leveling the match at 2-2.
Campbellsville continued pressing after the equalizer.
Mihlali Blesi forced goalkeeper Mauricio Gonzalez De Leon into a save at 68:53, and
Izan Garcia Gancedo put another attempt on frame in the 78th minute.
John replaced Holton at 76:15 and supplied the decisive finish with 3:18 remaining. His unassisted goal at 86:42 restored Campbellsville's lead and completed the 3-2 comeback.
Bethel produced two attempts during the closing minutes, but neither reached the target. Isaac Joaho Espinoza sent a header wide before Neill had the Wildcats' final shot blocked in the 90th minute.
Campbellsville finished with 11 shots, five on goal, and four corner kicks. Bethel recorded 16 shots, seven on goal, and four corners as the Wildcats moved to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
