During his time in the NFL, Cantwell was the backup QB for Jake Delhomme with the Carolina Panthers and Joe Flacco with the Baltimore Ravens.  Cantwell was coached by current Bears Head Coach John Fox, Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh, Former Washington Redskins Head Coach and NFL great Jim Zorn, current LSU Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron and QB Guru George Whitfield.

Cantwell was a walk-on quarterback at the University of Louisville in 2004 and went on to become a four-year varsity letter winner. As a freshman, he earned the starting role for the 2006 Gator Bowl, being named the game's MVP. The following year, he helped lead the Cardinals to a 12-1 record and a trip to the FedEx Orange Bowl as a sophomore. Prior to the 2008 season, he was nominated for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Maxwell Award. At Louisville he completed 58.6 percent of his passes (313-534) for 3,912 yards and 26 touchdowns. He had a QB rating of 127.6.

Cantwell was selected 1st Team All-Academic Big East in 2008 the same year he graduated with a Sports Administration Degree from U of L.

In high school, Cantwell played for CU head coach Perry Thomas at Paducah Tilghman High School. He helped lead Tilghman to a 31-8 record during his three years as a starter. He ended his career as the school's all-time leading passer, completing 458-756 passes for 7,272 yards and 70 touchdowns.

In 2014 Cantwell guided starting quarterback Jake Russell  to one of the best statistical and overall seasons ever of any CU Quarterback.  Jake Russell was 4 time Mid-South Conference Player of the Week during the 2014 season and broke many passing records on the way to a conference championship.  Cantwell also took over the role as Special Teams Coordinator in 2014 and which saw Kicker Will Ward have a breakout year earning 1st Team all-conference honors.

The 2015 season was another banner year for the QB position at CU as senior QB Jake Russell continued to excel under Cantwell’s tutelage.  Russell led the nation in passing and was voted conference player of the year in the Mid-South Conference.  Russell capped his 2 year career as the all-time passing leader at CU, back to back conference championships, and was awarded All-American honors his senior season.

Special Teams continued to be a strong phase in 2015 for the CU tigers. Kicker Will Ward was awarded 2nd team all-conference honors while finishing in the top 20 in the nation in field goal percentage and PAT kicking percentage and punter Erik Krivitsky was awarded 1st team all-conference honors. Returner Jarrod Harrington finished in the top 20 in the nation in Kick Off Returns.
