Matt Brown was hired in the summer of 2018 to take over the linebacking core for head coach Perry Thomas. The defense in 2018 was better against the run than the pass with the team allowing 1,223 total rushing yards and 67 of a total of 161 first downs were picked up on the ground by CU's opponents.

The linebackers were leb by junior Parrish Howell Jr., who was the third leading tackler on the team with 23 solo stops and 25 assisted tackles. He also recorded two tackles for a loss, two pass break-ups, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble in 2018.

He came to Campbellsville after working previously for three different powerhouse high school programs across the state. His most recent stop coming at Lafayette High School the previous three seasons.

While at Lafayette, Brown coached the defensive line. The Generals had two phenomenal seasons with Brown on the sidelines and reached two KHSAA 6A Championship games.

In 2016, Lafayette went 13-2 but lost to Trinity High School in the 6A State Championship. Their only two losses that season came to the Shamrocks. In 2015, the Generals recorded a 12-3 record but lost to Male High School in the 6A finals.

From 2012-14, Brown held the defensive line coaching positioning at Woodford County High School in Versailles, Ky – which was his second stint with the Yellow Jackets. He also coached at Woodford County from 2006-2007. In addition to defensive line, he coaches the special teams and wide receivers.

In the 2008-2009 seasons, Brown was the defensive coordinator for Paul Lawrence Dunbar in Lexington, Ky. He also worked with the defensive line and was responsible for all aspects of the strength and conditioning programs.
