Coach Keith Adkins is entering his 16th season at the helm of the Campbellsville University Tigers. During Adkins’ tenure he has led the Tigers to eight 20-win seasons; with seven of those coming in the past 10 years. Prior to Adkins, CU had a total of four 20-plus win seasons in it’s previous 36 years as a four-year college.
Campbellsville won a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season title in 2014-15 with Pikeville, ending the regular season at 25-4 overall and 12-4 inside the MSC. The Tigers played 10 Top 25 opponents and won seven. CU also won its second MSC Tournament title in 2015 and went to the NAIA second round where the were defeated by Westmont (Calif.). In addition, Adkins was named MSC Coach of the Year for the second time and also NAIA/NABC Coach of the Year for the first time.
In 2009-10, the Tigers captured their first-ever Mid-South Conference regular season title and ended the year with a 26-8 record and NAIA National Tournament berth after finishing runner-up in the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Beginning in 2005-06, Adkins and the Tigers had a five-year run that was the most successful five-year stretch in the program’s history. It began with a 27-6 record, and the program’s first Mid-South Conference Tournament championship. Adkins’ was chosen for his first MSC Coach of the Year award and the Tigers made another trip to the NAIA National Tournament. The trip to the NAIA Tournament resulted in the program’s first national tournament victory, as CU advanced to the field of 16 teams for the first time.
In 2006-07, CU returned to the national tournament with a 27-7 record and also won its first round game. CU followed with a 26-10 record in 2007-08 and the Tigers’ first-ever NAIA National Tournament Fab Four. On Nov. 22, 2010, Adkins became only the second CU men’s basketball coach to win 200 games with a win at Union University in Jackson, Tenn. He achieved the milestone in only 333 games.
Including 2014-15, Coach Adkins has recruited and developed 14 players who have played professional basketball, 41Tigers have earned All Mid-South Conference honors, four Tigers have been chosen as MSC Player of the Year and 28 have been chosen as Academic All-Conferece. Also, 27 players have earned NAIA or NCCAA All-American accolades and nine have selected as NAIA Scholar Athletes. Also, Darius Clement won the 2015 MSC Champions of Character award - the third plater to do so in Adkins' history.
Prior to taking the head coaching job at Campbellsville, Adkins spent six years as an assistant. Three at CU (1997-2000), two UNC-Greensboro (1995-1997) and one at Pikeville (1994-95). He was an assistant coach on the 1995-96 UNCG team that went to the NCAA Tournament and was inducted as team into the UNC-Greensboro Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.
Adkins is a native of Paintsville, Ky., where he played in three state tournaments as a back court player. In 1987 he helped lead his Paintsville team to a final four appearance. In 1988 Adkins was a member of the Kentucky All-Star team and a first-team All State selection. He holds the Paintsville school record for most points in a half, scoring 30 in one half against Pikeville High School in January 1988.
He was named Kentucky Male Athlete-of-the-Year in 1988 for his performances in both basketball and baseball at Paintsville High School.
Adkins played his first two seasons of college basketball at the University of Notre Dame, including a second round berth in the 1989 NCAA Tournament. After two seasons in South Bend, Adkins transferred to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he was a two-year starter averaging 11 points per game as a senior. Adkins ranked second in the nation in free throw percentage as a junior and still holds numerous Seahawk team records.
Adkins graduated from UNC-Wilmington (1994) with a B.A. in physical education. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children: Ashley, Bradley, Sarah and Luke.
