Entering 2025-26: 4th year at Campbellsville, 8th year as collegiate head coach
Cumulative Record as Head Coach: 94-99 (.487)
Alfonso Alvarez joined Campbellsville University for the 2023 men's volleyball season as head coach. In his third year as the head coach, Alvarez coached his team to a 23-8 record and 14-2 inside the River States Conference. The Tigers reached the River States Conference Championship match in 2025, falling to Georgetown 3-2. In 2025, each of the three match-ups against conference-champion Georgetown went to five sets.
Alvarez most recently was the men’s volleyball head coach at Bluefield University taking the team from a 1-13 overall record in his first season and growing the program to a 15-19 finish in just his third year at the helm. He left Bluefield as the winningest coach in program history.
Alvarez, a Miami, Florida native, has coached at the club, high school, and club levels of volleyball since 1996. His high school career began in 1998 with Alvarez serving as athletic director and head coach at various schools in Miami-Dade County. His teams set school records for most wins in a single season and collected district championships on their way. In 2003, Alvarez guided the Florida Christian School’s girls’ volleyball team to a 45-12 record and regional finals appearances in back-to-back seasons. In 2005, Alvarez was tasked with developing a boys’ volleyball program where he amassed more than 250 wins and helped numerous student-athletes attain collegiate volleyball scholarships.
Returning to college sports in 2018, Alvarez served as head coach and sports information director at Florida Memorial University with women's volleyball where he set the record for the most wins in a single season. That record was then broken the very next year by Alvarez's first recruiting class. During his time at FMU, the women’s volleyball team also won the Director’s Cup for the best overall team GPA in the university’s athletic program.
Alvarez has coached and directed several club programs over the years. He was the club director for the co-ed Powerhouse Volleyball Club and his most recent positions were at Miami United Volleyball Club, coaching 18U boys, and at Miami Hype coaching 16U girls. Among the many tournament championships, his girls’ 12U team won the prestigious Cloverleaf Tournament (2008). Then, in 2013, his boys’ 18U team won the AAU National Championship Silver Division. In 2013 alone he helped five boys into colleges with volleyball scholarships. Alvarez served as a court coach and Master Evaluator for USA National High-Performance Program in 2018 for both the boys and the girls.
When not involved with volleyball, Alvarez spends time with different organizations such as Camp Bahamas, a Christian sports youth camp. He has taught men’s Bible study class at his church and participates in short-term mission work. He has a passion for ministering to others in a practical way. One of his favorite Bible verses is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Alvarez has been married to Jackie Alvarez for 24 years and together they have four children, Jenny, Gio, A.J., and Amaris. They all play volleyball.
