Campbellsville's Lady Tigers went on a 21-2 run midway through the
first half and went on to defeat Harris-Stowe University 85-70 in
McKenzie Tenn. at the Roy N. Baker Classic.
Megan Isaacs started her first game of the season and responded in kind with 14 points and six rebounds.
"She worked her way into the starting lineup and it's well deserved,"
said CU Coach
Ginger Colvin to radio announcer
Jay Turner. "She
literally never stops moving."
CU got good support from just about everybody as the Lady Tigers had 10 players posting a mark in the scoring column and five of them in
double figures.
"That's what I love," said Colvin. "having different people come out and stepping up."
The Lady Tigers were aided in the first half by a 25-14 rebound advantage and 11steals. They only forced five turnovers in the second half, but that may have been by design.
"We pressed in the first half, but with a game tomorrow we decided to work on our half-court defense." said Colvin. "We have a lot to learn and have a long way to go, but any win on the road is a good one."
In the second half, the Lady Tigers (4-0) continued to apply pressure but were unable to extend their 24-point lead thanks to six second-half 3s and 15-16 free throw shooting by Harris-Stowe. With four minutes remaining in the game CU led 79-66.
Campbellsville never trailed in the game, earning leads of 2-0, 18-8 and 41-20. Harris-Stowe pulled within 20-18 with 12 minutes to go in the half when the Lady Hornets' Denisha Mitchell hit a three. But from then on, the Lady Tigers outscored their opponent 22-10.
In the second half, Ca'Andra Davis' two free throws with little more than three minutes to play cut the lead to 79-66. But a put-back by
Whitney Ballinger and a layup by Isaacs salted the game away.
"Obviously we would have liked to have come out with a little more intensity in the second half, but sometimes its hard to do," said Colvin
Campbellsville stays on the road Saturday in McKenzie, Tenn. for a 5 p.m. game against Classic host Bethel. Bethel is ranked 20th in the nation.
