Union University owns three of the last seven NAIA women's national
titles and the Lady Bulldogs (10-1) did nothing to make anyone think
that they might not be a contender this year by defeating previously
unbeaten Campbellsville 90-70 Saturday in Jackson, Tenn.
Ahead 21-20 with a little over five minutes to go in the first half,
Union went on a 29-8 run the remainder of the half to, in essence, put
the game away.
"We played pretty well for the first 15 minutes," said coach Ginger
Colvin to radio play-by-play man
Jay Turner. "Mentally I don't know
where we went, but it was a place we shouldn't have been."
Campbellsville cut that lead to 15 at the three-minute mark in the second half, but never seriously threatened to even Union's advantage.
Campbellsville played 18 minutes of the initial half without its All-American
Whitney Ballinger, who was whistled for her second personal foul at the 18:02 mark. Ballinger has been shackled by foul trouble through most of the first eight games and went to the bench with only one rebound to her credit.
Colvin was disappointed in the fouls that forced her star to the bench.
"You'd like to play with your best and we couldn't do that tonight," said Colvin. "Those two fouls, I don't know, they were very iffy.
"They (Union) have a nice team with so many weapons. We have a long way to go."
Ballinger did get to double figures (14) in the second half, however, as the Lady Tigers played Union to a virtual stalemate after half-time.
Courtney Danis led the Lady Tigers with 17 points.
Kristi Ensminger led the team with seven boards.
Union had five players in double figures, led by Kaitlin Dudley's 20 points.
Campbellsville returns to the friendly confines of Powell Athletic Center on Thursday where the Lady Tigers will take on Midway in a 7 p.m. game.
