Walk Off Friday

Campbellsville, Kentucky

The Campbellsville University Tigers Baseball team opened up MSC play today and could not have started any better.  Even though nails were being bitten all day, the Tigers were able to sweep rival Georgetown, moving their overall record to 11-2, and they now sit in first place in Conference with a 2-0 record.  The Tigers were able to take the first game in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 win, and the result was identical in the nightcap, a 2-1 comeback win.

Marc Wilson (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) was the game one starter and shined in his conference debut.  Wilson held Georgetown in check all day.  Wilson finished the day tossing 6.2 solid innings, allowing just one run.

Down 1-0 in their last at bat, the Tigers came roaring back.  After two quick outs, Brian Chase (San Jose, California) drew a walk.  Jimmy Voelker (Placerville, California) extended the inning with a sharp single to left, which set the table for senior Nathan Quesenberry (Elizabethtown, Kentucky).  Quesenberry battled and worked a 7 pitch at bat.  On the 7th pitch, Quesenberry laced a single into centerfield to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, Nick Smith (Cecilia, Kentucky) lined a one out single.  Jimmy Voelker then came up and blasted what appeared to be a sure fire walk off homerun.  The wind knocked the ball down, holding Voelker to a double.  After Nathan Quesenberry was intentionally walked, Alex Ponich (British Columbia, Canada) came to the plate with the bases loaded and the winning run on third.  Ponich wasted no time as he took the 0-0 fastball into right field for the walk of single, giving the Tigers the 2-1 win.

In relief, Spencer Frantz (Rogue River, Oregon) was simply brilliant.  Frantz faced 11 hitters, and none of them reached base.  Frantz moved to 1-1 with the win.

Game two had virtually an identical feel.  Freshman Jake Kutsukos took the hill for the Tigers and turned in a solid performance.  Down 1-0 in the sixth, the Tigers were able to once again tie it up.  With Jimmy Voelker on third and a 2-2 count on Logan Smith (Campbellsville, Kentucky) with two outs, Smith ripped a game tying single down the right field line.

With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers would leave Georgetown standing on the field once again.  Nick Bertolucci (Cupertino, California) drew a walk and Tyler Derby ( San Jose, California) laced a single into center.  With runners on 1st and 2nd and two outs, Chris Curley (Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky) came up and ended the game.  This time, Curley took a 1-0 fastball and drove it to the right center wall for the walk off hit.

Alex Tolmachoff (Peoria, Arizona) moved to 3-0 with the win in relief.  Tolmachoff tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.

The Tigers are now 11-2 overall and are 2-0 in MSC play.  They will complete the four game series tomorrow at Tiger Stadium, game one is scheduled for a noon start.  Junior Eric Mattos (San Jose, California) will be on the hill in game one.
