Campbellsville, Kentucky
Â
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Campbellsville University Tigers Baseball team set out to do something they haven't done in a very long time...sweep conference rival Georgetown. After two momentus wins yesterday, Head Coach
Beauford Sanders sent
Ian Pick (Santa Clara, California) and
Eric Mattos (San Jose, California) to the mound in the final two games of the series. The two starters were brilliant as Campbellsvile swept the double header, moving them to 4-0 in conference play, and 13-2 overall.
Â
In game one, Pick controlled the game from start to finish. No Georgetown baserunner ever reached third base in the win and Pick need just 61 pitches to notch the complete game shutout.
Â
Offensively, the Tigers changed the theme of yesterday, as they got on the board in the first inning of the first game.Â
Tyler Derby (San Jose, California)Â worked a one out walk, and
Brian Chase (San Jose, California) singled to give Campbellsville runners on first and second with two outs. With runners on, the table was set for
Jimmy Voelker (Placerville, California). Voelker took a 1-1 curveball and blasted it into the left center gap, scoring both runners. It was Voelkers 15th RBI, good for best in the MSC.
Â
The two runs were all Pick would need, but he did get some insurance later in the game, thanks to a
Brian Chase 2 RBI double. The Tigers would go on to win 4-0.
Â
Game two had a similar feel. In the top of the first inning with two outs,
Chris Curley (Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky) lined a homerun (4) to left field. Two Pitches later,
Brian Chase blasted a no doubter for his fifth homer of the year.
Â
Two runs was more than enough for
Eric Mattos (1-0) who picked up his first win of the season. Mattos tossed 5.1 innings of shutout baseball.
Â
Georgetown's lone threat came in the fifth inning, as they loaded the bases with one out.Â
Spencer Frantz (Rogue River, Oregon) came in and couldn't have shined any more. Frantz induced an inning ending double play which was turned perfectly by
Nathan Quesenberry (Elizabethtown, Kentucky). Frantz went on to toss a perfect seventh, picking up his first save of the season.
Â
The Tigers will look to carry their momentum into next week. They will travel up north Tuesday to play at Indiana University S.E. in a mid week double header. Conference play will resume on Friday at the University of the Cumberlands.
