#10 Baseball Opens MSC Tournament with a Bang

Georgetown, Kentcuky

After completing a regular season that was brilliant, going 32-8, the Campbellsville Tigers started their new season, the postseason today in Georgetown.  The first round of the playoffs the Tigers will look to advance in is the Mid South Conference Tournament, a tournament they have won three years in a row.  Opening up against West Virginia Tech in the first round, the Tigers got off to a perfect start, blasting the Golden Bears by a final of 16-2.

Campbellsville got off to a bit of a slow start, as they trailed 1-0 early.  Down by one in the top of the third, the bats woke up and never went back to sleep.  With Tyler Derby on base with two outs, second baseman Colin Bryan came up and crushed a no doubter to left for his third homer of the year.

The Tigers added on to their total in the fourth.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Nick Bertolucci doubled to right field to clear the bases.  After a bad read in the outfield, Bertolucci was able to score on his hit, capping the four run inning and giving the Tigers a 6-1 lead.

The long ball was the theme of the fifth innning.  Chris Curley led off the inning with a solo blast, his 15th of the year.  Brian Chase followed Curley with a double to right center.  One pitch later, Jimmy Voelker hit a towering homerun to left.  It was Voelker's 7th of the year.

Campbellsville had its final big inning in the sixth inning.  They put up six runs in the inning, which was headlined by Brian Chase's 16th homerun of the year.  Chase is now hitting .489, good for the second best batting average in the nation.

The run support was more than enough for Eric Mattos who made the start.  Mattos tossed seven innings for Campbellsville, allowing just one run on two hits.  Mattos struck out 4 on the day and moved to 4-0 on the season.

The Tigers now advance to the semi final game tomorrow where they will either play the University of the Cumberlands or Georgetown College.  The  winner of tomorrow's game will host the championship game.  First pitch tomorrow is slated for noon at Georgetown.
