Campbellsville University beat Georgetown 7-5 Sunday for its fifth straight Mid-South Conference Tournament title and the league's automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament.
Georgetown had forced an if-necessary game by beating CU 9-4 in a Friday match up in Campbellsville. The final was moved to Georgetown because heavy rains had CU's field under water.
Â
"I would have played anywhere," coach Beauford Sanders said about moving the game to Georgetown. "They didn't have the volume of rain that we'd had. We would have preferred to have played at home, but the game needed to be played."
Sanders' team was carried by the two home-run performance of Chris Curley. The junior from Fort Mitchell, Ky., slapped homers 17 and 18 on the season to become the lead home run hitter in a season in university history.
Campbellsville scored three times in the top of the first and never trailed in the game. Curley punctuated the first inning by a two-run homer.
Georgetown cut that lead to 3-2 before Campbellsville posted four more runs in the top of the fourth and secured a 7-2 lead.Â
Campbellsville had three more home runs in the game, accounting for four more runs. Colin Bryan had a two-run homer, Curley a solo shot and Jimmy Voelker also a solo shot, all in the fourth inning barrage.
Tyler Derby had two hits and Alex Ponich had three hits.Â
Reliever Jon Bourassa closed out Georgetown by allowing only one hit over the last three innings, according to Sanders. But the final wasn't without some drama. Bourassa, a sophomore from Prince George, Canada, allowed a one-out double and then walked a batter before coaxing the next two batters into outs.
The win leaves CU with a 35-9 record.
CU will learn about its opening round opponent on Friday when sites and pairings are announced for the 46-team national tournament field.
Five teams per site will participate in double-elimination tournaments with the nine winners joining Avista-NAIA World Series host Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho on May 22-29.
