Campbellsville University picked up back-to-back home
victories for the first time this season, opening Mid-South Conference play
with a 2-0 victory over Pikeville College on Wednesday.
CU senior Laura Swencki quickly found herself in a
one-on-one with Pikeville keeper, but was taken down in the box from behind by
a Pikeville defender to set up a penalty kick. Ashley Corum converted the kick
for the Lady Tigers' first goal and a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the match.
Ten minutes later, Swencki, a native of Lebanon, Ky., scored from the same spot
she was taken down earlier in the game off a cross from Hartford, Ky., native Katie
Henderson for a 2-0 lead.
Both teams were shutout in the second half. Meagan Johnson
had a shot off the crossbar in the 80th minute, but the Bears were
unable to connect on the rebound. CU Goalkeeper Sarah Akers stopped the Bears'
other nine scoring opportunities.
CU (5-2-1, 1-0 MSC) travels to rival Lindsey Wilson College
on Sept. 29 at 5 p.m.
