The Lady Tigers' success ratio against Lindsey Wilson College during
Ginger Colvin's three years at the helm can be summarized in three
words - not very good.
In the five games prior to Thursday night's matchup in Columbia, the
Lady Tigers tasted victory one time. In the past 12 matches Lindsey had
won 10. But ratios are just a number on a page and Campbellsville
proved that their No. 10 national ranking is solid by turning back the
Lady Raiders 83-67.
But it wasn't easy, nothing ever is in a rivalry game.
"I'm not sure any of our players have won in this gym against Lindsey," said a pleased Colvin after the game. "It was a good win for us."
Campbellsville (18-1, 3-0) trailed by as many as 12 in the first half, but closed the half on a 19-11 run and then scored 10 of the game's next 12 points after intermission to punch out a 54-48 lead.
Whitney Ballinger had a career high in rebounds (22) and also turned in a monster game on the offensive end with 33 points (17 in the first half).
Lindsey was able to work back into the game and tied the score at 62 apiece with 10 minutes left. But
Kristi Ensminger hit a bucket, Ballinger hit a free throw and Wendy Messer a 3 to give the Lady Tigers a 69-62 lead.
Courtney Danis hit two buckets sandwiched around a
Megan Isaacs jumper and the Lady Tigers led 75-64.
"That seems to be typical Lady Tiger basketball," said Colvin. "We lost our edge there for a minute, but picked it back and finished well."
Lindsey 11-6 (1-2 MSC) was led in scoring by Sierra Rambert's 18 points.
Joining Ballinger in double figures were
Mackenzie Lee (11) and Danis (10). Melley Heaton and Lee, along with Ballinger, dished out four assists each.
"We did a great job getting Whitney the ball in places where she could score," said Colvin, "but she not only scored, she rebounded and played defense."
Ballinger posted five blocks in her stat line.
"I think our depth helped tonight," offered Colvin. "I think our bench contributed 28 points and that's great support."
The Lady Tigers will host Rio Grande (12-7, 3-0) Saturday at 2 p.m.
