Campbellsville's Lady Tigers used a balanced scoring attack against
offensively high-powered Olivet Nazarene Friday night in the Powell
Athletic Center defeating the team from Illinois 110-82 for their 14th
victory of the season. The 14 wins ties the best start ever in Lady Tiger
basketball history.
The win gave the Lady Tigers their second seven-game win streak and
momentum as they go on the road Monday for their final non-conference
game against Midway.
Olivet came into the game averaging nearly 95 points a game.
Campbellsville, averaging 86 points per game, knew that something had
to give. Campbellsville was plus 14 and Olivet minus 13 to their
averages.
"We knew exactly what was coming," said Lady Tiger coach
Ginger Colvin. "We did not run a play tonight, not one. They want to get you in an up-tempo game, turn you over and hope they make more baskets than you do."
It was one of the more interesting matchups this season as Olivet jacked up 17 3s in the first half and 30 for the game. But Olivet hit two less from behind the arc than the Lady Tigers, who canned 10 of 19. And Campbellsville hit their 3s at a 53 percent clip, 16 percent better than their opponent.
Olivet substituted freely in the game, sending in five fresh players every two minutes. But they were no match for 14-1 Campbellsville. The loss dropped Olivet to 7-10.
Campbellsville scored the first 12 points of the game and were never seriously threatened. After Olivet closed to within 25-15 with 11 minutes to go in the first half, the Lady Tigers outscored their opponent 20-13 to led 55-38 at the break.
It didn't get much better for Olivet in the second half, as consecutive 3s by
Mackenzie Lee, at the 10-minute mark, pushed the Lady Tiger lead to 22 (80-58). When
Whitney Ballinger stole a pass and hit a layup at the 6:20 mark the score had ballooned to 97-67.
Ten Campbellsville players reached the scoring column, led by Lee's and
Courtney Danis' 19 each. They were joined in double figures by
Melly Heaton (16) and Ballinger (12). Ballinger also had five assists and six blocks.
The Lady Tigers outrebounded Olivet 53-49, led by seven carom performances by Ballinger and
Corin Dunn.
Megan Isaacs grabbed six boards.
"With the pace of play we had to play a lot of people and
Keisha Compton and
Corin Dunn did a good job for us tonight," said Colvin.
Dunn had seven points to go along with her rebounds, and Compton, although she didn't score, dished out three assists.
Although the Lady Tigers made 28 turnovers, Colvin thought her team did a good job of making the extra pass. Campbellsville held a three-turnover margin over Olivet.
After playing Midway, CU opens Mid-South Conference play on Jan. 14 at home against Pikeville. That game starts at 6 p.m.
