Campbellsville University volleyball recorded its 16th three-set win of the season and second this week in Mid-South Conference action with a 3-0 win over the University of Rio Grande on Wednesday.
Rio took a 4-1 lead to open the match and forced a close first set, before Monica Chernichan put the match away with a kill on each of Campbellsville's final points en route to a 27-25 win. She had nine kills in the opening set and finished with 13 in the match.
The second set was also tied early, 10-10, but Campbellsville held off a Rio rally. Rio pulled close, 19-17, but did not score another point, as Shannon Cahill collected four kills and Lilian DaSilva had an ace in a five-point run to game point. CU won the set, 25-17, on an attack error by the Red Storm.
Cahill's attacking remained strong in the third set, scoring on the first point with a kill. Rio pulled even 12-12, but CU went on to win the set 25-19.Cahill finished with 15 kills in the match.
Caroline Martin led CU with 40 assists, only the second time in her career to have 40 or more assists in three-set match. It's her sixth 40-plus assist match this season and 12th of her two-year Campbellsville career. She also had 10 digs, as did libero Audrey Sanders.
Campbellsville (20-5, 7-1 MSC) travels to University of the Cumberlands on Monday, Oct. 18 for a 7 p.m. MSC match.
The Lady Tigers return home next Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. to host Georgetown College in a battle for the Mid-South Conference East Division. Georgetown recorded its first MSC loss Wednesday night, at home to Shawnee State University, 3-1.
