Campbellsville University bounced back from a Top 25 loss Saturday with a win at Trevecca Nazarene University, 3-1, Monday night.
Monica Chernichan led all hitters with 21 kills for the Lady Tigers, including seven in the fourth set to help lead Campbellsville to victory.
Trevecca won the first set 25-20 before Campbellsville evened the match with a 27-25 second-set victory on an attack error by the Trojans.
Shannon Cahill tied the second set, 25-25, with one of her 15 kills in the match and
Brooke Marcum followed with a kill to give CU the lead, 26-25. Marcum finished with only three kills, but had two assisted blocks.
In the third set, Campbellsville trailed TNU, 14-4, before rallying its way to a 25-21 win. The Lady Tigers collected its final 21 points off 13 kills, one ace and a handful of Trojan attack errors. CU allowed only two kills by the Trojans down the stretch in the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Lady Tigers closed things out in the fourth set with a 25-18 win, carrying its momentum over into the set en route to an 11-7 lead. Trevecca narrowed the lead to two points, 12-10, but would get no closer as
Samantha James had five kills in the set to go along with Chernichan's seven. James finished with eight kills in the match, one solo block and four assisted blocks.
Three CU players had double-doubles in the match. Chernichan had 13 digs to go along with her 21 kills, Cahill led the Lady Tiger defense with 23 digs in addition to 15 kills and
Caroline Martin collected 38 set assists and 12 digs. Defensive specialists
Audrey Sanders and
Lexis Lloyd each had 14 digs. Other double-figure stat leaders were
Genevieve Collette with 10 kills and
Lilian DaSilva with 12 assists.
The win follows a 2-2 weekend at the Indiana Tech Tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind., where Campbellsville defeated Lourdes College in three sets (27-25, 25-21, 25-22) and No. 22 Olivet Nazarene University in three sets (25-18, 25-11, 25-20). CU lost on Oct. 1 to the University of Northwestern Ohio in five sets(22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 23-25, 12-15) and the following day to No. 14 Indiana Tech, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-16).
Campbellsville (17-5, 5-1 MSC) will host Shawnee State University (19-5, 6-0 MSC) in a Mid-South Conference battle Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Powell Athletic Center.
