Women's soccer blanks Temple 6-0, earns spot in Mid-East final

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE. KY.  - Not much seems to come easy for CU women's soccer. In 20 games going in to the NCCAA playoffs, the average margin of victory or defeat in 12 of those matches was two or fewer goals.

Owning seven more wins and four fewer losses than its first-round opponent in the Mid-East Region Soccer Championships, Campbellsville bucked that trend. The Lady Tigers put away Tennessee Temple x-x Friday afternoon at Finley Stadium.

Cassie Yannelli got the Lady Tigers the only goal they would need in the eighth minute when she took a pass from Kelsey Mandel in from of Temple goalie Kenetria Gonzales. CU would score three more times in the first half to lead 4-0 at the break.

Mandel got a goal of her own in the 18th minute when Megan Campbell set her up perfectly in the box. Ashley Corum and Jessica Ralph closed out the first-half scoring with goals in the 19th and 34th minutes.

Campbellsville added two more goals after intermission, one by Bailey McDonough off a feed by Yannelli and another by Yannelli off a feed from Audra Hockenberger.

The Lady Tigers had a whopping 39 shots, 27 on goal. CU's keeper, Brandie Hagerman, stopped one shot on goal out of two total by the Crusaders'.

CU plays the winner of the Covenant-King College game on Saturday at 6:00.

FEEDING THE HUNGRY

The four participating schools in the National Christian College Athletic Association Women's Mid-East Region Soccer Tournament collected more than 100 cans of food as part of the NCCAA's outreach objective for 2010.

Campbellsville University, the host school, Tennessee Temple, Covenant and King colleges joined  forces as part of the overall ministry. The food the soccer teams generated will be going to Adanta's Food Pantry.

"We looked the other day and we have nothing," said Brittany Preston, an in-school employee of Adanta. "They did this last year and we got all kinds of food."

Preston, who is the wife of CU men's soccer coach, Adam Preston, said that Adanta has many clients who are needy and can use immediate help.

The CU men collected about 125 cans, but they were taken with the team to Lookout Mountain, Ga. where the host team (Covenant) will disburse them, said Adam Preston.

"I know without last year's donations we couldn't have gotten by," said Brittany Preston.
