Turns out the Campbellsville volleyball team does have a killer
instinct. The Tigers opened Mid-South Conference play Monday in
Frankfort by dispatching Virginia Wise 3-0, 25-18, 25-14, 25-7.
"I'm more pleased with this effort than I was with our match with them
at their place," said coach Amy Eckenfels. "That was a disaster."
The Tigers took little time seizing the momentum, taking a 9-3 lead in the first set and never really looking over their shoulders. In the second set, Wise pulled even at 10-all until CU score nine straight points.
Campbellsville ended the second set with four kills in the last six points,
Samantha James' service ace being the game winner.
The Tigers took 6-1 and 12-4 leads in the third set and went on runs of 6-1 and 8-1 to close out the match.
"We played our game," said Eckenfels. "The girls were on it today."
Campbellsville had three players with double-digit kills, led by
Shannon Cahill's 14.
Genevieve Collette and James had 13 and 10, respectively.
Monica Chernichan barely missed double-digit kills with nine. As a team the Tigers had 52 kills in the three games.
Caroline Martin post a 41-assist match and dug out 14 balls.
Audrey Sanders led the Tigers with 24 digs. Chernichan had eight and James seven.
Campbellsville improves to 26-9 and Wise falls to 11-23.
The Tigers will play Shawnee State, winners of the MSC East Division, in the semi-finals at 6:00 today.
