Box Score A two-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning ruined Campbellsville University's afternoon Tuesday, as Trevecca Nazarene University rallied in extra innings to down the eighth-ranked Tigers, 3-2, in Nashville.
With two outs and two on, Trey Morrison singled through the hole at second to drive in Mark Hewitt and the winning run for the Trojans.
Campbellsville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth after Zac Townsend scored on a sacrifice fly by Ziadeh. Nick Bertolucci crossed the plate a few pitches later on a balk by Trojans pitcher Caleb Longshore.
Through six innings of work, CU pitcher Michael Caleb struck out four and allowed only two base runners off 58 pitches thrown. That changed in the seventh, as the Trojans led off the inning with a walk by Zack Sutton. Caleb retired the next two Trojans, but Brad Gooch turned a 1-1 pitch into a two-run home run over the leftfield fence to even the score, 2-2.
Caleb exited the game after the ninth and received a no decision for his Tiger pitching debut. He threw 103 pitches, struck out seven and allowed two runs off three hits and a walk.
With the score knotted at 2-2 entering the 10th, CU looked to take care of business quickly in its first extra innings game of the season. The Tigers worked the bases loaded with one out in the 10th, but stranded all three runners as Kyle Pfirrman struck out the side for the Trojans. For the game, CU stranded 10 runners, including seven in scoring position.
Spencer Fentz (0-1) collected the loss for CU in relief. He did not allow a hit for the first five batters faced, but gave up back-to-back-to-back singles in the 11th, as Trevecca rallied for the win.
Pfirrman (1-1) recorded the win for Trevecca (3-5) after allowing no hits, two walks and striking out two in an inning a two-thirds of work. Longshore, TNU's starter, struck out six, walked one and allowed eight hits in eight innings. He had one earned run.
Alex Ponich, Townsend and Bertolucci led CU with two hits each, while Trae Weiss was the only Trojan with two hits.
Campbellsville (2-2) will host Indiana Tech for its home opening series this weekend with doubleheaders Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tigers add the games with Tech to the schedule after games previously scheduled with Concordia University of Michigan were canceled for the weekend.
