Box Score Campbellsville University struggled to find its offense outside the fifth inning during Saturday's Mid-South Conference openers. That wasn't the case Sunday, as the eighth-ranked Tigers downed University of the Cumberlands, 11-5, in game three of the MSC series. Game four of the series was canceled due to darkness with CU leading 4-0 in the second inning.
The Tigers opened the day with a four-run first inning in game one, as Alex Ponich led off the bottom of the inning with a single to center and worked his way around the base path on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Brian Chase. Richie Rowland's shallow single to left scored Ponich for the first Tiger run. Logan Smith followed with a two-RBI double and scored on a ball put in play by Zach Townsend.
While the early lead was nice, Cumberlands answered with three runs in the second, but the Tigers' posted another four-spot in the third. Chase led off the third with his first home run of the season, blasting a 3-1 pitch over the center field fence. Jameel Ziadeh later doubled in two runs and scored on a base hit by Michael Caleb.
Colin Bryan added a solo home run in the fourth and Townsend added an RBI and scored in the fifth to round out CU's runs.
Eric Mattos (3-1) went the distance for CU, allowing a run in the sixth and the seventh in addition to the three in the second. Only four of the five runs were earned. Mattos gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out six.
Adam Blanton (2-1) picked up his first loss of the season for Cumberlands after allowing five earned runs off seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Campbellsville (9-8, 2-1 MSC) will host Union College on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
