Box Score Alex Ponich scored the only Tiger run Tuesday, as preseason No. 8 Campbellsville University lost at Cumberland University, 7-1.
Ponich singled his first two trips to the plate and scored on an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth by
Brian Chase. That was nearly all the offense the Tigers had though. CU collected five singles for their other hits in the game, one each from
Michael Caleb,
Richie Rowland,
Zac Townsend,
Jameel Ziadeh and
Luke Hawkins.
Cumberland scored two runs in the first on a pair of doubles from Troy Frazier and Matt Greener. The Bulldogs also added two in the second on a solo home run by Greg Appleton and RBI base hit from Kris Miller. Appleton added an unearned run in the third, while Greener drove in a run in the eighth. Sam Kikla had the Bulldogs' other home run in the game, hitting a solo shot in the fourth.
Matt Vance (3-1) recorded the win for Cumberland with five innings of work. He allowed one unearned run off seven hits and no walks. The Tigers worked through five pitchers, with Michael Caleb getting the start and loss. Caleb (1-2) allowed four earned runs, five total, off seven hits, two walks and a hit batter. He struck out four.
Campbellsville (13-11, 6-1 MSC) hosts Lindsey Wilson College for a four-game Mid-South Conference series Friday at Saturday. The series begins with a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. and will conclude with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
