Box Score 2 Campbellsville University picked up its third Mid-South Conference series win of the season Saturday, but saw its nine game conference win streak come to an end with an 8-2 loss in the night cap. Campbellsville won the first game of the day, 3-2, to win the series and slide into a tie for second place in the Mid-South.
Alex Ponich led off the first game with a single past the shortstop - the first of 10 Tiger hits in the game.
Brian Chase later scored Ponich for a 1-0 lead. The Blue Raiders tied it in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Jeff Murphy to score Max Rhodes.
Jameel Ziadeh singled in a par of runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the Tigers' lead. Rhodes later knocked in one more run for Lindsey Wilson, but
Eric Mattos and
Alex Tolmachoff held off the Blue Raiders for the win.
Luke Gadow led CU in hitting for the day, collecting a double and two singles in the first game.
Mattos improved to 5-1 on the year with his fourth straight win. He struck out six and allowed only one earned run off nine hits. Tolmachoff recorded his first save by retiring the last two Lindsey hitters in the seventh inning.
In the second game, Rhodes gave Lindsey Wilson its first lead of the weekend with a two-run home run to left in the first inning. However,
Brian Chase
answered, and evened the score, by dropping a two-RBI homer into the Tigers bullpen in the bottom of the first.
Jeremy Toohey regained the Blue Raiders' lead in the fourth with a first-pitch, pinch hit double to left that scored two.
The Blue Raiders posted four runs in the top of the seventh, largely due to a three-run double by Rhodes.
Lindsey Wilson pitcher Lance Rose (2-1) held CU hit less during the third through sixth innings. He exited the game after walking the first two batters in the seventh. For the win, Rose gave up two earned runs off two hits and seven walks. He had no strikeouts.
Curtis Payne (1-3) took the loss for CU after giving up four earned runs in four innings of work. He allowed four hits, one walk and struck out three. Tolmachoff took over in the fourth, but exited with two outs in the seventh after giving up four unearned runs.
Michael Caleb closed out seventh with strikeout.
Campbellsville (16-11, 9-1 MSC) will host Taylor University for a non-conference game Monday.
