Tiger baseball blanks Asbury, 6-0

Box Score Campbellsville University collected its fourth 10-hit game in the last five days Tuesday, however the hits came slowly in the Tigers' 6-0 shutout of Asbury University at Tiger Field.

With the bats not popping the first three innings, CU head coach Beauford Sanders decided to give all hitters the bunt sign after Brian Chase led off the fourth with a single. That included Colin Bryan, who came to the plate with runners on second and third with one out. Chase barreled his 6-foot-6, 250-pound frame down the third base line as Will Blackburn delivered the first pitch to Bryan. The well-executed squeeze bunt came just seconds before Chase tagged home for the Tigers' first run of the game.

"We were fortunate the pitcher didn't pick it up earlier," said Sanders of Chase's early jump.

The run woke up the Tigers, who collected seven hits in the fifth through seventh innings. Leading the way was catcher Richie Rowland, who helped CU score four of its next five runs. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native singled in two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. Bryan picked up another RBI in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Craig, who was courtesy running for Rowland.

Sanders was glad to see the hits and runs start flowing, but knows there's plenty of work to be done.

"They finally engaged their mental processing with the physical attributes and started doing more up to their capabilities," Sanders said. "I felt like we weren't ready to play today, and that's just not acceptable. We have to do a better job of being ready to play if we expect to keep playing in May … (Ten hits shows) we have some potential there, but we've got to realize it and be ready to play every time."

Winning pitcher Michael Caleb also helped insure his victory, hitting a solo home run to left with one out in the seventh. Caleb pitched five scoreless innings to start the game, allowing four hits and one walk. He struck out four.

CU (18-12, 9-2 MSC) will return to Mid-South Conference action this weekend with a doubleheader at West Virginia University Tech at 1 p.m. and another doubleheader Saturday at noon.

Also on Tuesday, Campbellsville fell from the NAIA Top 25. The Tigers were ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll but did not receive a point in the first regular season poll released Tuesday.
