Lady Tiger coach
Ginger Colvin expected her opponent in the semi-finals
of the Mid-South Tournament to pack its defense in around All-American
Whitney Ballinger. No surprise there. So, Campbellsville used some
outside shooting to bury Lindsey Wilson 82-59 Friday afternoon in
Frankfort.
Ballinger, who averages nearly 22 points a game, scored 28, but it was
the perimeter production of
Melly Heaton and
Wendi Messer (6 of the 10
3s) that provided the margin of victory. CU outscored Lindsey 30-9 from
beyond the arc. The Lady Tigers needed eight 3s to break a 1992-93
record of 255 for a season. They got that in the second half, and
canned 10 altogether for 259. They had five in each half.
"That changes the whole complexion of the game when we can hit from
outside like that," said coach
Ginger Colvin. "When we do that it
really opens things up for Whitney and then everyone else is better
too."
Campbellsville broke out of the box on a 20-2 run. Lindsey cut it to 10 once in the first half, but a 3 off the backboard glass by T.J Thomas at the half-time buzzer put CU up 40-27.
In the second half the Lady Blue Raiders closed to within eight when Lindsay Waters hit a jumper, but the Lady Tigers went on a 12-5 run and distanced themselves once again.
The win propels the Lady Tigers into the Saturday night finals for the second straight year against University of the Cumberlands. That game will be at 6 p.m. at the Farnham Dudgeon Arena in Frankfort, Ky.
"We're already assured of a bid to the national tournament, but it will be a big disappointment if we go and we're not the conference tournament winner," offered Colvin. "We're one win away from being 17-0 against conference competition and we've got some pretty good teams in the Mid-South."
CU defeated the Lady Blue Raiders 83-67 and and 58-50, both in come-from-behind fashion, during the regular season.
Campbellsville shot 45 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3 and out-rebounded the Lady Blue Raiders 38-28.
"That was the difference in the game," said Colvin. "
Megan Isaacs came in and got nine boards. She just played huge."
Ballinger led all players in rebounding with 13.
