If CU Softball Coach
Shannon Wathen were to scout her own team, she'd
probably prefer the one that showed up Sunday for the second game of a
double-header against Union College.
The Tigers went out of conference and were blanked 3-0 in game one at
Veterans Memorial Park, even though collecting two more hits than their
Bulldog opponent. But in game two, Campbellsville spanked the ball all
over the park, collecting 16 hits and 16 runs in a five-inning shutout
of their own.
The split gives the Tigers a 27-15 worksheet and sets up a Tuesday matchup against Lindsey Wilson in Columbia that could go a long way in deciding the regular-season Mid-South Conference champion. Campbellsville will enter the game at 14-4 and Lindsey Wilson 17-5.
But back to Sunday. In the first game, Union broke open a scoreless tie in the sixth when the Bulldogs pushed across three runs when they collected four of their five hits in the game.
Campbellsville managed seven hits, all singles, led by two safeties by
Kacie Vincent.
Emma Napier,
Jordan Cornett,
Jennifer England,
Alex Jane Clemmons and
Katie Daniels all hit one-baggers.
Allison Horton, who shouldered the loss, pitched good enough to win, allowing but five hits while striking out a like number. But the Tigers stranded nine base runners in the game, two each in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Game two was a different story, though. Campbellsville scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back. For good measure, the Tigers added another eight-spot in the third.
Cassidy Kroeker allowed but one hit in her five innings of work, fanning six along the way.
The Tigers got a monster game from Napier, who scored three times, got three hits (including a double and a home run) and knocked in five runs. Dillender had a single, double and homer and three RBI and
Morgan Bullock a three-RBI game with two singles. Cornett and Clemmons had three hits each, Cornett knocking in two runs and Clemmons one. Vincent had two RBI with her two hits and England also reached base safely.
In the first inning, Napier had a home run and a double during a bat-around and Dillender parked a ball good for two of her three RBI.
In the third, Bullock and Napier plated two runs apiece with singles.
On Tuesday the first game at Lindsey starts at 5:00 EDT.
