Tigers' win streak snapped at 12, split with Asbury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Campbellsville University baseball's second-longest win streak in recent years was snapped Tuesday in a 6-4 loss at Asbury College.

The Tigers beat Asbury, 8-0, in the first game of a double-header to extend their streak to 12 games, the second longest in the past five years for CU. However, a two-run fifth inning pushed the Eagles past Campbellsville in the second game.


In game one, Rusty Devitt (2-1) recorded his first complete-game victory and first shutout of the season, striking out 10 Asbury batters and allowing only two hits.

Offensively, Michael Caleb continued his hot hitting for the Tigers, posting a perfect 4-for-4 game with two RBIs, while Richie Rowland hit his third home run in two games. Logan Smith had two hits in each of the Tigers' games Tuesday.

In the second game, Danny Olszowy hit solo home runs in the first and fifth innings, helping to give Asbury a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Campbellsville bounced back to gain a 3-1 lead in the second inning with RBI singles from Luke Gadow and Tyler Craig. Oiler drove in one of the runs with a sacrifice fly.

The lead stretched to 4-1 in the third inning, as Brian Chase hit a solo shot for his eighth home run of the year. It was the 17th home run since the Tigers' win streak began March 29.

Asbury tied the game, 4-4, with a three-run second inning, which included a two-run homer by Drew Freeman - his first home run of the year.

Campbellsville's Jake Kutsukos took the loss, while Cody Christopher (2-3) pitched four innings in relief of Brad Williams for Asbury's win.Christopher allowed only two hits and one walk while striking out six.

Before the games Tuesday, the NAIA announced Campbellsville moved back into the NAIA Top 25 poll at No. 21. The Tigers also broke back into the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) rankings at No. 6.

Campbellsville (28-13) travels to Union College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
