CU splits at Rio, No change in MSC baseball standings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Low-scoring pitching duals consumed the first two games of No. 21 Campbellsville University's Mid-South Conference series at No. 25 University of Rio Grande.

Ian Pick (9-0) won the first battle in a 2-1 win for the Tigers, while Jared Lunardi dropped to 5-2 on the year in a 2-0 loss in game two of the twin bill.

Pick allowed seven hits in the game one win, but allowed only one run to the Red Storm.

Jameel Ziadeh gave Campbellsville a 1-0 lead with a two-out single in the second inning of the first game, and Colin Bryan knocked home the second run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Rio posted its only run in the sixth inning when junior first baseman Francisco Ramirez singled home Brad Konrad to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

Both CU runs were unearned for junior Red Storm pitcher Desmond Sullivan (6-1), who allowed three hits in the loss.

Lunardi allowed only three hits in the second game of the day and struck out three. However, a two-run fifth inning proved to be the difference in the game. Rio scored two runs with two outs in the inning, as senior catcher Tyler Plumpton doubled home Richard Hernandez to put Rio in front 1-0. Junior shortstop Brad Konrad followed with an RBI single.

Red Storm freshman lefty Ryan Robertson (9-1) recorded the win over Lunardi, striking out seven and allowing only two hits and two walks. The Tigers' two hits in the game from Brian Chase, who had a hit in the first inning and another in the seventh. It was the first career shutout for Robertson.

The split leaves Campbellsville with a half-game lead of Rio Grande in the Mid-South standings.

Campbellsville (30-14) has recorded its second consecutive 30-win season and 12th during Beauford Sanders' 20 years as head coach.

CU will play another MSC doubleheader at Rio Grande on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live by Rio Grande via Stretch Internet. The broadcast can be listened to by clicking here.
