Tigers split MSC series at Rio Grande

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Four games, two wins and no change in the Mid-South Confernece baseball standings. That about sums up a Campbellsville University weekend trip to Rio Grande, Ohio. The Tigers split a Saturday doubleheader at the University of Rio Grande by winning the first game, 5-2, but dropping the second, 5-1. CU also split games on Friday to remain in the MSC lead by only a half game.





In game one, Campbellsville took advantage of three Rio Grande errors and produced eight hits. Richie Rowland powered the Tigers' offense with three RBIs, including a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run that put Campbellsville up by a 5-1 margin in the fifth inning. Logan Smith added two hits and an RBI to the Tiger cause.

Tyler Schnuck scored both runs for Rio, as the RedStorm cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the second inning with a sac fly by Ryan Yakura.

Eric Mattos (8-1) pitched five innings to get the win for the Tigers, despite allowing seven walks. Rio managed only two hits against him and two runs while he fanned five batters. Alex Tolmachoff pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the save. Losing pitcher was Rio junior Angel Santiago (6-1). He pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and five runs with five strikeouts and three walks.

In game two, Curtis Payne (3-4) took the loss for CU. He allowed three runs off three hits and two walks. He had only one strike out.

Rio posted a two-run second inning and added two more runs in the fourth and one in the sixth. The win set a new school record for Rio with 39 wins in a season.

Campbellsville (31-15) will host Trevecca Nazarene University on Tuesday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. for the first-ever night game at Tiger Field. A cookout for students will begin at 5:30 p.m. There will be numerous games and giveaways throughout the game.
