Box Score 2 Campbellsville University helped decorate a milestone for head coach
Beauford Sanders on Friday with a sweep of West Virginia University Tech, 13-2 and 10-2, on the road.
The 10-2 night-cap victory was an exclamation mark on Sanders' newest career milestone - his 1,000
th game as Campbellsville's head coach. Sanders, in his 20
th year at CU, now has 586 wins and 414 losses with the Tigers, a .586 win percentage. He has 854 wins in his NAIA and junior college career combined.
"It is great for coach Sanders to reach another milestone in his coaching career. His dedication to the sport, his athletes and this university is very evident in his won/loss record and his longevity in the profession," said Rusty Hollingsworth, director of athletics.
The day began with the Tigers taking down the Golden Bears in six innings, 13-2, in game one. CU used a seven-run third inning to pull away from Tech, scoring six of the runs with two outs. Zac Townsend singled in a one-out run and later scored on a base hit by Jameel Ziadeh. Alex Ponich drove in two more with a double before Brian Chase capped the inning with his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left. Ziadeh also homered later in the game.
The seven-run third inning stretched CU's lead out to 9-1. Michael Caleb doubled in the Tigers' first two runs in the second inning and added another RBI later in the game. Luke Gaddow also knocked in a run.
The second game was highlighted by a home run from Richie Rowland. Rowland, Chase, Caleb and Logan Smith each had two RBIs in the game. Colin Bryan had the other.
In the two games combined, Smith and Bryan led CU with four hits each. CU has collected 10 hits or more in six of its last seven games.
Ian Pick (6-0) and Jared Lunardi (4-1) collected the wins for CU on the mound. Pick pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run off four hits and no walks. He struck out five of 21 batters faced.
Lunardi also tossed six innings, allowing no earned runs off five hits and a walk. He struck out eight of 25 batters faced. Alex Tolmachoff pitched the final inning of the second game, allowing one unearned run off one hit.
CU (20-12) will meet West Virginia Tech again for a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
