Campbellsville sizzled in the first innings of its double header with
Georgetown Thursday evening. Unfortunately the other 12 innings fizzled
and the Tigers dropped both games and probably any hope of a regular
season MSC title.
Campbellsville skidded into third place in the standings with a 21-7
conference mark (35-19 overall). Georgetown and Lindsey Wilson are tied
for first at 20-6. The Tigers have no more conference games to play and Lindsey
plays Cumberlands and Georgetown takes on Pikeville this weekend. The
conference tournament starts next Friday in Danville, Ky.
Campbellsville actually outhit Georgetown 15-14, but Georgetown's hits came when they were needed. Campbellsville left 13 base runners stranded in the two games.
The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning of both games, but could plate only one other run the rest of the night.
In the first game,
Bailey Dillender hit a three-run home run in her first at-bat and then
Allison Horton hit a solo shot in the fourth.
Georgetown's eight hits were all singles, the biggest one being a bases clearing safety by Jordan Clemmons. The home team was trailing 3-1 before the fourth inning outburst.
CU wasted doubles in the fifth and sixth innings by
Jennifer England and Horton, respectively.
Horton didn't have her best stuff from the circle and pitched from behind in the majority of the innings. She wiggled out of trouble in the first and third frames, but Georgetown scored four times in the fourth and that proved to be all they would need. Horton had given up seven hits, walked five and hit one batter through four innings, but she gave up only one hit in Georgetown's last two at bats.
Napier,
Alex Jane Clemmons,
Katie Daniels and
Morgan Bullock all had singles in the game.
Jennifer England and Horton had doubles.
Campbellsville again jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two. Napier led off the game with a double and was plated by
Jordan Cornett's single. England then singled and Clemmons laced a two-run double for the Tigers' last runs.
Georgetown closed to within 3-2 in their half of the first and then scored four runs in another big fourth frame to seal the sweep.
Cassidy Kroeker, much like Horton, didn't have her best stuff either. She gave up but six hits, but she also gave up a leadoff walk in the fourth and hit a batter that allowed Georgetown to extend the inning.
Clemmons had two singles to go with her double. Napier added a single as well.
CU goes out of conference on Saturday to host Martin Methodist in its final regular-season games. First game is at 2:00.
